Re: Laptop resisting to embrace Linux

You can also try booting with the splash off. I used to have a computer which refused to boot with those options enabled in grub for reference linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic root=UUID=93175314-6971-471d-ad73-89b78cc70319 ro quiet splash The section in bold should be removed from the boo...

Re: Problem installing Nvidia driver for Nvidia GE Force car

Have you tried recreating your Xorg.conf? You can boot into single user mode, runlevel 3 or simply stop the display manager (mdm) Once there, move your Xorg.conf file to somewhere else or call it something else Then: sudo Xorg -configure This will create a new Xorg.conf in /root. Take that one, move...

Re: Please help, network connection doesnt work

From the network output you provided your network appears to be functioning. We can see that it is getting an IP and that there are packets going through the interface. Can you describe what you mean when you say your network isnt working? Can you ping google.com or some other well known site? Do yo...

Re: Microphone doesn't work

hmm thats interesting, The command line output shows that the computer can see your audio device(s). But the mixer/sound app does not show anything there. I might have to think on this for a bit. Perhaps someone else has some suggestions. I have some ideas that I used to do to get SPDIF sound workin...

a vm is a virtual machine.

I might suggest exploring virtualbox. I can't explain it properly except to say that it allows you to run multiple OS' simultaneously. Check it out and see if it suites your needs

Re: Won't Install to an e-machine

You can try booting the Mint install medium in "failsafe" mode. It could also be a bad burn, and it could actually just be some compatibility problems. As a last resort you could take a different Desktop version (XFCE, Mate etc) and try installing that and then just swapping out your desktop For exa...

Can you also take a screen of the "hardware" tab of the sound settings as well as the "Output" tab?

Re: Laptop resisting to embrace Linux

Instead of allowing the DVD to boot the default way, hit some key to get the menu and then choose the failsafe type option.

I have to do this for certain ATI cards in order to boot, perhaps it is the same with the old NVIDIA card.

Which desktop are you using?

Mate? Cinnamon? Gnome? KDE? XFCE?

Are you sure the computer is suspended and not just turning off the monitor?

Re: Thinking about trying a new Linux Distro

First let me just give you an fyi, Optimus is currently being worked into the NVIDIA drivers. This has just started in the last several weeks so it will have official support without Bumblebee or ironhide etc. As for your stability issues, I have been using Mint since Mint 5, and really I haven't ha...

It almost sounds like you have a problem with your network.

Can you roll back to a previous kernel via the grub menu?

Re: Cisco-compatible VPN client: Connection to Hamachi netwo

You are looking to install something for network manager

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc
From there click on the network icon in the tray, go to VPN connections and you should see an option when creating a new one for "Cisco Compatible VPN"

You should be good to go from there

Re: USB boot disk

So basically you have a usb drive giving you problems and you just want to level it and start over? Try writing zeros to it sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<usb drive> bs=1M count=14000 This should clear all junk on it. If that fails you can use a program like "shred" to securely delete the drive and s...

Re: New network, Windows fine, Linux not :(

Have you examined dmesg directly after the failure? What about /var/log/syslog or /var/log/auth.log or /var/log/kern.log? Those would be places I would check right off. Alternatively you can actually open up 4 different terminals (I use a program called terminator for this but gnome-terminal/konsole...

Re: hp 3520 not printing

Ok, So the logs which may indicate problems are /var/log/syslog and the command dmesg. Dmesg can be a little confusing, it refers mainly to hardware. For example in dmesg you would see messages about a usb device being plugged in or possibly a bad driver. You will want to uninstall the printer and t...
