For the most part yes. Mint's base and Ubuntu's are the same. Be careful, and back up your important files in case anything goes wrong.

I was also a victim of the new kernel, Intel Chipset here too. I only have one sata hard drive and the system would boot. The new kernel gave me an extra CD-ROM drive that did not exist though! Oh well these things happen and I didn't lose any data because of it. Someone might want to create a stick...
