Ubuntu 18.04 is almost here.

The new LTS release is upon us and despite some people complaining there are some really great features! The kernel patching without rebooting came in yesterday! It is offered as a service and only takes a couple seconds to set up. I have wanted to see how this works ever since it was announced and ...

Re: Bad Windows but conquering the desktop war

Steve Jobs said something very wise in an interview, "Windows does not have to loose for Apple to win." Or something very close to that. The same kind of applies for Linux and distros in general. Also, Linus Trovalds said, " When Microsoft starts writing apps for Linux we know we have...

Re: Two old computers

I use a similar machine as my main desktop. It is an HP dc7800 SFF, Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 @ 2.4 GHz, AMD 2 GB Radeon R200 graphics, 8 GB Kingston DDR 2 low profile RAM (4 x 2), onboard NIC, onboard sound, Samsung Evo 250 GB SSD (os and apps), 240 GB SanDisk Plus SSD for storage and an LG super mult...

Wayland has really come a long way since the last time I tried it! Aside from a couple quirks it is very usable now. :D

Running Ubuntu itself on two machines that previously were not supported. GDM still has some issues occasionally and last week there was some breakage with AMD graphics. It is coming along though and I am sure it will be in great shape by the April 26th release date. :)

Re: Why are we so proud of our [Linux] OSs?

I think the pride comes from making my own choice rather than just accept what comes on the hardware. There are times though when the hardware leaves you without choices... What got me hooked in the first place was being able to do everything I could do in Windows on Linux. It's easier to get involv...

Re: Finally, support for AMD A10 R6 graphics!

For a full featured desktop environment with effects I though memory use was very good. The last time I tried Gnome shell memory use was much higher. I could get Windows 10 to use the same amount of memory after a lot of tweaking! I did not do anything to tweak 18.04, just installed it. :) My thinki...

Finally, support for AMD A10 R6 graphics!

Some of you may know that I have had to use Windows 10 on my desktop and laptop lately because of hardware support under Linux. Last night I tried the development build of Ubuntu 18.04 on my HP 17-121 wm with an AMD A10 processor with R6 graphics. It was slow to boot from the live DVD and took a whi...

Re: Do you use Windows?

Currently running Windows 10 on a new HP laptop and an older HP business class desktop. The laptop is not supported yet under Linux, the desktop gets a screen full of errors and is slow as molasses running Linux. Windows is not so bad once you go through and tweak everything and install all the open...

I completely agree with MintBean! The government has no business regulating and controlling the internet. People seem to quickly forget that not all that long ago the government wanted to tax internet use.

Re: Need help installing

Gave nomodeset another try with 18.3 Cinnamon x64. The Live DVD did finally make it to a desktop in software rendering mode with a low resolution. Where can I go from there to get it working right?

Need help installing

I have an HP 17-g121 wm laptop that I would really like to run Mint on. All I get from the Live DVD is a flickering screen.... Compatibility mode gives me the same result. Here are the basic specs https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04773111

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
