Re: New people need to stop using 18.X and use 17.3.

You know things are getting interesting when people post their opinions and experiences with different supported releases of the same distro! :) There are a couple regressions with the Ubuntu 16.04 base used in MInt 18 but unfortunately that happens. I just installed Mint 18.2 Cinnamon on my new des...

Re: Upgrading Desktop PC

Hitachi, now HGST hard drives are in all my machines now. Business class hard drives have always given me years of use. As I understand Hitachi's hard drive business was picked up by Western Digital. In any case I have learned that you get what you pay for as far as hard drives go. My second choice ...

Re: why gnome is so popular?

I work a lot of hours these days but I made some time to look at Gnome Shell recently. It was nice that extensions could make the desktop mostly the way I wanted it. People always complain about the lack of ability to customize in some desktop environments, Gnome extensions sure take care of that! C...

Re: Playing with KDE distros....Neon

Yesterday I installed PCLinuxOS 2017.5 on my HP 655 laptop, it runs great! I have not used KDE in years but I knew Texstar would have everything tweaked just perfect! I have the most current version of KDE and it is nice and solid. Also, I can finally reboot the laptop and have working WiFi! :D

Re: All Desktop Screenshots for 2017

Hannnnggg onnn... I notice a distro switch! Care to share the reason? Or just different computers?
Different computers. Mint works with the Wifi on one, Ubuntu works with the Wifi on the other. It was the simplest way to have everything working since I live at work these days.

Re: Why Won't Microsoft Take My Money?

What a time consuming problem! I had issues with Microsoft Office last year when I was taking classes, the ribbon or what ever you call it would just disappear and never return! After loosing all my work twice I decided to try LibreOffice to do the assignment and just save as a .doc. Not only did Li...

Re: I keep trying to go Android.

Hi lmintnewb2! I get your point. I guess if you are willing to take some risk and do some research it might pay off. I just research quality and reliability of phones I am interested in. My wife bought a $600.00 LG phone that failed as soon as the warranty ran out! My wife uses her phone more than h...

Re: I keep trying to go Android.

I share InkKnife's point of view about updates. I am not an Apple fan either but updates are the same on all supported devices. I have never really found a need to root a cell phone, that is I do not want to risk destroying a working device that I paid a lot of money for. The iPhone came stock with ...

Re: I keep trying to go Android.

InkKnife, you and I have similar experiences with Andriod for sure! I never thought I would buy an Apple product but both me and my wife went with the iPhone 7 this time around and we couldn't be happier! Everything you said about Andriod updates is true. When we used Android, one phone would seem t...

Re: Weird problem. Wifi unavailable after reboot.

Maybe the newer kernel will make it in the repos in the future. For now at least the laptop is reliable, so long as I do not reboot it. :)

Re: Weird problem. Wifi unavailable after reboot.

Just gave it a try, no luck. I noticed also that when I reboot, my speaker volume is lower than when I do a cold boot.

Edit: When I start the laptop the volume is set to 148%. If I reboot, the volume is 100% when the desktop loads. It may or may not be related but I found it odd.

Re: Weird problem. Wifi unavailable after reboot.

Oddly the problem did not exist with Manjaro, however other things were wrong there. The problem only occurs with the Ubuntu 16.04 base, (Mint 18.1). I have tried newer kernels with the same results. The problem also did not occur with Mint 17 using the Ubuntu 14.04 base.
