Re: Have you ever had one of those days....

This happens to a lot of us in our 40's/50's... when we realize we're closer to the end than the beginning. It goes away when we realize we're not at the end yet.

Re: Servers for networks own cloud ... always on?

Owncloud has a sync client (that runs on the client computers). If setup to sync a given client folder with a folder on the server, the sync will occur when the server is up, otherwise it will wait.

Re: Moving infected files from Windows computer to Mint computer

Would you please lighten up. I asked a simple question: What files and what maleware were detected? Given the file(s) and/or a means of reproducing the maleware, we stuff it an immutable Linux VM and observe its behaviour and, if it's active, we characterize the process. Is a miscreant communication...

Re: Moving infected files from Windows computer to Mint computer

Hey, maybe we'll find one. There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance—that principle is contempt prior to investigation. - AA Big Book Have a read: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content...

Re: Moving infected files from Windows computer to Mint computer

Humm...

I don't mean to be Chicken Little here, but there are cross-platform exploits and the OP might have one.

To properly answer the OP's question, we need to know the names of the infected files and what malware was detected in them?

Re: Updating Bios Requires Windows OS on Acers and...

Dell sells laptops/desktop with Ubuntu pre-installed with UEFI. It's easy to hack Ubuntu off the system and run another distro instead. A friend has one of these machines: Precision7510 XCTO. Yup, pricey, but it's rock-solid and less than a Mac. There are several other manufacturers. I have looked c...

Re: need a computer

But that ASUS Sabertooth 990FX is very fast and probably very current. Any suggestions re drivers.
All the devices function with stock Linux kernel. That is, everything works out of the box. However, I usually install the NVidia driver rather than use the kernel's driver.

Re: need a computer

A home-made desktop is much more likely to be Linux-compatible than any off-the-shelf unit with a Windows pre-install. I have built several machines with Asus mombos and NVidia cards. Some of these had on-board AMD GPUs, which I disabled in favor of discrete NVidia cards. So far, the NICs always wor...

Re: wireless internet shared to ethernet

I have done this is two ways. First, was to buy/create a wireless access point device. One possibility is the Trendnet TEW-638APB. It makes the connection to the wireless and it has Ethernet ports for wired connections. Alternatively find an old wireless router and make it an access point... approac...

Humm, If a person wants to evade government surveillance, then they should use a one-tme-pad and an offshore numbers station. For the rest of us, if you are willing to tolerate a slow connection to selected commercial sites, Tor is an effective way to fuzz your geolocation, PII, and visitor footprin...

Or... Install Whonix in a virtual machine: http://www.whonix.org This privacy/anonymity-centric OS installs Tor with important configurations and safeguards that are frequently overlooked (time attacks, DNS forwarding, etc.). It's based on Debian so it's a familiar environment for Mint users. I inst...

Re: NSA classifies linux journal readers tor and tails linux users as "extremists"

Humm, I find Linux Journal to be pretty tame. I first started reading it via ACM ( http://www.acm.org ), which offers a subscription to members. As I see it, any journal or magazine offered by ACM is, by association, legitimate reading material for computer scientists. On privacy, folks often interp...

Re: What Windows software can you not do without?

What distinguishes Office? Briefly, Track changes and advanced formatting. Ask a team in a professional publications department to give Word alternatives a try (I have actually done this with several groups). They deal well with procedural variations and are happy to be rid of the silly Office tool ...

Re: What Windows software can you not do without?

Hi, What ... can you not do without I wish it was as simple as that. As a systems administrator and a nearly fanatical Linux advocate, my challenge is; what software can't others do without. On a commercial level, Microsoft Office is a valid user preference, particularly when advanced collaboration ...
