Re: Picking the right Personal Cloud
I've set up owncloud on a couple of machines and I like it for file storage/sharing. I have not integrated any application serving but there appear to be a few common examples, eg calendars and such.

Re: CPU Swap, will it effect install?
I do not expect that this would cause a problem. I have moved entire installs from machine to machine (by moving the hard drive) and the kernel is happy with the change... even amd to intel. (New graphics cards and other hardware changes where a proprietary driver was originally and explicitly insta...

Alternativeto has a list of comparisons but it doesn't give the nice tabulated features format. I does show "likes" for the packages as well as links to project home pages: http://alternativeto.net/software/simplescreenrecorder/?platform=linux I have tried several and I have found, for my ...

Also, test Google Chrome (not Chromium) for your browser for watching the videos. Chrome now has a built-in, HTML5 decoder that makes pipelight/Silverlight unnecessary for many Silverlight-based videos, most notably Netflix and Amazon Instant Videos.

Is this a VM? If so, you will need to use the bridged adaptor (Machine>settings>network) to connect to your LAN's regular IP.

Re: Installing Linux Mint for Unsavvy Computer Users
have any of you installed Linux Mint for someone whom is not very computer-savvy? Many, many times, mostly for non-profit community groups, sometimes for friends and family. They, in turn, have passed the Linux solution along to others. My favorite convert is very cautious and sceptical. But... she...

I like this type of adventuresome thrill seeking too. Definitely have a look at Linux from Scratch. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/wanted to be part of the installation and configuration process.
Note: you can do it in a VM too.

Re: wishful thinking, hidden agendas, and propaganda
Hi, With a few (expensive) exceptions all computing was done in the cloud prior to ~1976. In fact, it was primarily done on mainframes running Unix. All data was stored on a central system and all programs were served from it. Users sat at (dumb) terminals and shared time with other users. Then, the...

Re: Changing names for boot menu items
Hi Here's what I do: First, make a safe backup of grub.cfg sudo cp /boot/grub/grub.cfg /boot/grub/grub.cfg.BACK now edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg Start with only the first menuentry as a confidence building measure. Around halfway down or so you will see a first line that begins something like: menuentry...

Re: Screen display goes beyond edges on LCD TV
Some LCD models have a video setting in the menu that allow tweaking the display... some don't. Is this an ATI GPU? If so, I have found that using the proprietary ati (catalyst) driver was the only way I could eliminate the overscan on certain LCD TVs. I have two systems with ATI cards working using...

But, if the stream, as recorded, did not contain a caption track, then sub-track is greyed-out.

Re: Computer repair shop won't fix mine because I use Linux
We don't support Linux usually makes me grit my teeth. However, I frequently get phone calls that show 000-000-0000 on caller ID. The person at the other end tells me that they are from "customer service" and that they need me to "turn on my Windows computer." Alas... they don't...

Re: Newb to Linux, not to technology..
Also, look into virtualbox. You can install various distros and experiment with them as virtual machines. In a VM, you can take a snaphot of a machine's state prior to doing things that you are uncertain of and, if something goes wrong, you simply restore the snapshot and try again. It is the best w...
