Re: devede
In synaptic, choose the "Status" filter on the left (just below Sections). Then click "Installed (auto-removable). Do you see a list of packages? If so, then select them them and uncheck the "automatically installed" check box (from the Package menu item). Sometimes apt (and...

Re: Document Viewer bug
We haven't heard from the OP for a while. Meanwhile, here is an interesting example of a pdf form that cannot be opened by any of the opensource document readers: http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/pnw-ppe/rfcpp-ppcpr/Guidelines_lignes-directrices2014-15-eng.pdf (Let me know if you disagree.) If this is the p...

Re: Handbrake Crashing
If you want to re-explore the terminal error approach, do this: Open a terminal and type: handbrake Then press enter Handbrake will open. Use it until it crashes. Go back to the terminal and copy all of the text. The text will include the error. Paste the text into a reply to this thread and be sure...

Re: System freezing when mounting TrueCrypt vol
That's cool.
The tcplay (cryptsetup will also open TC volumes) does have a rugged set of command sequences. Using zenity in scripts takes a lot of the hunting and pecking away.

Re: System freezing when mounting TrueCrypt vol
I have seen this anomaly on one machine. I switched the user to tcplay and the problem is fixed. It's a commandline package https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tcplay I automate opening containers with a script. #!/bin/bash # Open a Truecrypt container using tcplay # Provides an alternate that does...

Hello,
Let's get an error message. From a terminal, run:
handbrake
When it crashes the terminal will show an error message about the crash. What does it say?

Re: Nvidia or AMD?
I use, and prefer, NVidia on all machines where I have a choice. I have not had problems with NVidia GPUs on any Linux distro (over 15 years). NVidia GPUs are supported out-of-the box by the Linux kernal's open source driver named nouveau. You have the additional option of using NVidia's proprietary...

Re: ssh works with putty, but not with nemo's"connect to ser
I have also confirmed that the process works when connecting to a Linux host from a Windows putty client. I haven't setup a Windows cygwin host recently, but I am sure no one here would be interested in setting up a Windows host anyway. (If the new install uses a different username and you are re-us...

Hello, I am the author of http://mark-bishop.net/whitehat.php?page=page2 I have confirmed that the process works for Linux to Linux host-guest combinations. I have not confirmed the process for Windows putty clients nor have I confirmed the process for Windows cygwin hosts. In my confirmation, I use...

Re: how to send a no key wifi hotspot
Here's what I use:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162895
Also see:
https://github.com/oblique/create_ap
With the script made executable (chmod +x create_ap), the following makes a wireless hotspot that bridges to a wired NIC:
sudo ./create_ap --no-virt wlan0 eth0 MyAccessPoint

Mine also. But contrary to you, I still think it's too hot Well, I cheat. I use Arch for any machine that has an NVidia and/or Intel GPU that might be used for videos. With multi-use machines, I often create a separate boot for media applications/videos that has essentially no other resource hoggin...

Re: Why so serious about GNU/Linux?
Well, my spouse was burning through laptops with commercial OSs by simply watching videos, browsing the web, and getting/sending email. During movies the units would roast at 85-90 C. Booting the system would give the endless "waiting" routine while loading settings. The system would crawl...

Re: DNS Issues / Keeps Using ISP DNS
Hi, That command will last forever. In fact you won't be able to delete resolv.conf or edit it - even as root - unless the immutable attribute is removed first. I am apprehensive about what was causing resolv.conf to be overwritten in the undesired way. I am concerned with the network manager settin...

Re: DNS Issues / Keeps Using ISP DNS
A temporary hack: Edit the resolv.conf to reflect your desired nameservers. Immediately after saving it, make it immutable: sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf This will make it impossible for any service to overwrite the file, ever. It can be undone with: sudo chattr -i /etc/resolv.conf As for the orig...
