Re: doing new install, formatting of Win7 drive taking way too long

Yup, depending on the make, the BIOS can be nettlesom.

Also, be sure Windows itself is not constraining the machine to secure boot.

Or you could dd the media to a file named w10.iso and attach it as a cd storage device.

Re: [SOLVED I think]Clone to larger SSD left unallocated space

Hi, Not a question. The expression is just an inequality: GiB is not the same as Gb. There's a calculation we do because different applications use different units for expressing size. It's confusing because the abbreviations for the two units are very similar: GiB for one and GB for the other. You ...

Re: Clone to larger SSD left unallocated space

Great!

Looks like there is an 8 G swap

GiB != Gb
230 + 8 = 238GiB = 250Gb

PS: you are using a different filesystem than I.

Re: I have just be reminded why I ditched Windwoes

I have run into that problem. The number given by the install was no longer available. At the time I was able to hunt down an alternate number ((888) 571-2048). Does that no longer work?

I am glad I have these dinosaurs in VMs.

Re: Clone to larger SSD left unallocated space

Your new SDD is a 250 G drive. lsblk and gparted show that you have a formatted partition that fills the drive: 238.46 GiB = 256 Gigabytes ~ 250 Gb. My question is, what is in the used space? If all the files originally occupied 20 Gb and now the files occupy 111 Gb... what is the identity of the ad...

Re: Clone to larger SSD left unallocated space

Well, I would say that, rather than losing the space, you are for some reason occupying more space.

Have a look at gdmap (sudo apt install gdmap). Does that reveal any files are present that were not present in the original 20 Gb?

Re: I have just be reminded why I ditched Windwoes

The tech support industry must be having a field day handling Windows 8 and 10 issues. Yup, lot's of overtime. I have been moving our staff to VMs running full screen on Linux whenever possible. They are resistant at first but eventually they get it. Now, when something goes wrong, they can blame t...

First, unless the new disk's UUID has been changed, remove the original from the system. Assuming your don't have duplicate UUIDs on the running system and assuming you are not currently booted into an OS running on the new disk: from Gparted be sure the partition is unmounted and Menu>Partition>Che...

Re: The joys of living in Rural Areas

Out our way, the power goes out when it's cloudy, so most folks have 18 kids. No cell signal, no radio stations, no cable, and no TV here in radio-free Wastewater (even here in the booming downtown area). Verizon doesn't provide DSL, so we're all on dialup or gettin' FAPed by some slippery satelite ...

Re: Non Linux but networking question

Hi, This is pretty straight ahead. First, determine the subnet of your FIOS router (typicaly 192.168.1.0/24, which means all of the addresses begin with 192.168.1). Then, take a second router and connect one of its LAN ports to an ethernet port on your computer and log into this second router's admi...

Re: Windows 10---ARGH!

The hardest part of managing a hive of Windows PCs is managing the users. Here is a typical morning: I just clicked OK and now I can't see my files. I accidently drag-dropped my presentations folder somewhere and now I can't find it. The computer says Windows needs to reboot to complete updates... w...

Re: DNS not working after update

Hi, One of my first steps with a Mint install is to set the DNS servers manually and permanently. (Others may disagree with this, but it has worked perfectly for me... for years now.) If you want to give it a try: First, decide on your preferred nameserver. I typically use the router (192.168.1.1 in...

Hi,

In production environments I have found that SQL servers underperform on VMs. Network Available Storage too.

I don't have any benchmarks... other than complaint frequency.
