Re: Windows 10---ARGH!

Hi, Yup, Park's closed. I actually live north of the Quabin in central MA and drive 80 miles to W. Warwick. The company, an environmental analytical lab, was in N. Providence for about 60 years and I worked there full time from '87 to '05. They moved operations to W Warwick two years ago and I got r...

I feel sorry for you! If I had to, I'd end up at Butler Hospital (Providence, RI).
Actually, I was nearby in W. Warwick all day yesterday... fixing windows computers that updated!!

Re: Is WICD worth trying as an alternative to Network Manager?

Hi,

I do risky stuff in virtual machines first, carefully indentifying the steps that result in sucess. With a VM, if you make a mistake, you can restore your system to the previous step (provided you created a snapshot before you began your experiment). Give virtualbox a try.

Re: Use mounted NAS share in filezilla?

If it's a smb/cifs mount, you can locate the mountpoint within the filesystem, perhaps /run/user/1000/gvfs/

I have pretty much abandoned smb/cifs because it is (and always has been) slow and buggy. I prefer to mount my NAS shares with sshfs. The process varies depending on your NAS.

Re: SimpleScreenRecorder

I have had occasional problems like this. Toggling software compositing helped once. Transparency themes can cause problems. Also, the application presenting the video sometimes can be tweaked. For example, VLC has a setting for "accelerated video output" that has interferred with screen r...

Re: Net Neutrality

OK, For me, I still believe I have it right on this. If the net is the new press, then it should not be subject to censorship and an ISP being able to shape information access allows this. There is no alternate newspaper or radio station here in the hills. I don't believe I have a conspiracy theory ...

Re: Router/Firewall in Linux Mint

Hi, I actually sprang for the book "Mastering pfSense'" by David Zientara. But... the site documentation is good too. There is a package manager built into the pfSense web interface that has several usefull addons. The esentials are suricata for intrusion detection and pfBlocker, which is ...

Re: Router/Firewall in Linux Mint

Hi, Rather than making a general-purpose machine perform router functions, I chose to build a dedicated machine for the purpose. For the OS, I chose pfSense* https://www.pfsense.org/ . This is a prefered choice not only because it places the overhead on a dedicated machine but because community main...

Well, who [are] they? With regard to Net Neutrality they are ISPs. Post -3 appears to more generally question big-data privacy concerns, and not specifically with regard to marketing. Who are they? Well, ISPs, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Google, toy manufacturers, Firefox, and many, many others. Man...

Re: openssh-server on Linux mint 18 not accessible

On the Mint machine, can you ssh to yourself?

Also, is the machine running putty a Windows machine? (I ask because a better quality error message will help you and connecting with ssh -v provides better feedback.)
