Re: My sound is really weird.

First check for additional drivers for your sound device: Menu > Preferences > Software Sources > additional drivers tab Test your sound with a .wav or .mp3 file... or play an audio cd. Test your microphone with something other than Skype... some non-networked sound-only application. I use Audacity,...

Re: (Solved) Not connecting to WLAN using WPA/WPA2

I have a Backtrack VM that behaves the same way (static only). I believe my router may have an anti-mac spoofing tool activated. But DHCP works for all my other VMs including another Backtrack VM. Perhaps I fussed with the mac.

I like static better anyway.

Re: Will Linux work with 504 MB of RAM?

Yes, Linux will work.... but it won't be a jet sled. Steer away from the flashier distros/desktops and you will find that 512MB is pretty good. On older machines I install a minimal distro. I install LUbuntu on the real klunkers, but there are many others. Mint Mate will also probably work well. It'...

Re: SaMBa problem (Linux to Windows)

Yes, there are many good tutorials for samba. Most often, they clearly present the steps necessary for allowing Windows machines to see and use Linux-side shares. The reverse connection, Linux to Windows, usually works for me straight out of the box. Usually when it doesn't work, it's the Windows ma...

Re: SaMBa problem (Linux to Windows)

I also have an installation at a friend's house that has a similar problem. His network has a Windows 7 machine and a Mint machine. He can, from Mint, see the Win7 shares, but when he tries to open the folder he gets an authoriztion failure. If I bring my (Mint) laptop to his house I can see the Win...

Re: USB wireless receivers os dependent?

Wireless usb sticks require a driver to run on (any) operating system. Window's drivers usually come on a cd with the device, or they can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. Wireless usb manufacturer's don't often make it so simple for Linux users, but many distributions recognize many de...

Re: Missing network connection

Have you looked here for additional drivers:

Menu > Preferences > Software Sources > additional drivers tab
?

What do you see when you run:
ifconfig

how about:
lshw -c network

I install VBox directly from the Oracle site https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Good instruction there, simple, always works.

Re: Not connecting to WLAN using WPA/WPA2

Additional drivers are at: Menu > Preferences > Software Sources > additional drivers tab I am guessing that 'dont show this message again' is related to network-manager continually re-trying the connection that already failed. After checking the additional drivers, if it's still not getting connect...

Re: How to Secure External facing SSH Servers from attacks

Good article and well designed for a new comer.

I usually use ssh with key ecryption. It can be setup and done easily with a gui... Putty and puttygen. Here's an article I wrote on how to make this simple. http://www.mark-bishop.net/ssh.php

Re: Not connecting to WLAN using WPA/WPA2

When you say you can not connect, is it that the adaptor fails to find the wireless signal or does it find it but fail to connect.... throwing a "failed to connect", "Failed to obtain IP address" or "password error." What's the exact error or does it just hang? Sometime...

Re: Wifi was working, now does not even after clean install

Typically this (rf-kill) happens when a wifi adaptor is shut off, usually by way of a hard to find slider switch on the machine. There are a number of other posts on the Ubuntu forum, some of which require some nasty command line instructions, but most often it's the little switch.... which I someti...

Re: Wifi was working, now does not even after clean install

eth1 doesn't seem to be showing in ifconfig.
(Does 'ifconfig eth1 up' change that?)

With eth1 up, does 'iwlst scan' show any area wifi's?

If eth1 can't be brought up, what is the output from 'lshw -c network' ?

Re: Virtualbox and ssd

Perhaps I'm on the wrong track.

Can you start win7 in safe mode (tapping f8 with the VM activated) at startup?

I run Win7 in a VBox machine from Mint. I use the latest version of vbox (from Oracle) and not the package manager's version.

At setup, Windows 7 will restart rather than display a bluescreen.

Can you boot it into safe mode? If so, My Computer > Properties > Advanced Startup and recovery... uncheck restart on system failure

Ideally the VM with throw a bluescreen with an error code you can search

Re: Fresh Install, Problem Logging In!?

I'm not sure why this happens to you. One thing I would try would require another install. During the install process you will see an option to "Log in automatically." Pick this. Also, when you set your username and password during installation, pick two very simple combinations (e.g. user...

Re: Loving Mint! but Grub not working for Windows, please he

Hi, I use the Linux Secure Remix live CD. You download the iso, burn it to a cd, and boot the computer from the cd. One of the tools is Boot Repair. Running this will search your system for bootable images. This is a good live cd to have in your kit. It's at http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-sec...
