Re: Slow, is not the word for it, this might be off the subj

Hi, I frequently breath new life into old/limited systems for non-profit groups in my area. I have found that low overhead distributions are the key to making these systems usable. On very old systems I use Puppy Linux or LUbuntu. Performance wise, even on ripping hardware, I find Mate faster and le...

Re: download speed slower than win 7 :(

There are some tweaks I have used in sysctl.conf to optimize IPv4 TCP parameters. Check it out but be sure to make a backup copy of this file first. Out of the box, TCP parameters are set to values that accomodate "the average connection" including possible dial-up. Also look at the Admini...

Re: Copy Programs from one computer to another.

I recently used Clonezilla to completely copy an installation to another disk. Grub needs to be updated. Here I use boot repair on the Ubuntu secure remix live CD. The challenge will be: drivers on the laptop installation will be different. So, if you use this approach there will be a few hacks requ...

I use Remmina as a client.

Connecting to a rdp with a Linux host does not require a login but it does with a Windows host.

Re: Newbie needs help to connect to internet

Hi,

Quick question:

Have you tried setting the address dynamically (DHCP) from network-manager?

I usually use a static IP also, but just as a test try DHCP.

Re: Mint 14 - upload speed fine but download speed very slo

Could it be DNS?

ping www.google.com

in the output you will see the actual ip address being pinged

from firefox, enter the ip address into the the address bar.

Great news. Not sure why you got the double directory. I'm guessing that it's all in a single folder now.

Re: Uninstalling/installing apache2

Hi, After installing apache2 there's a bit of configuring to do. Look in the /etc/apache2 folder. You will see apache2.conf Also in the folder is a sites-enabled and sites-available folder. All of these need to be setup and apache restarted. There are many tutorials that will help you get these conf...

Hi, I use X11vnc. From the ssh terminal, you start it just once prior to starting an RDT session. When you close the VNC session, the x11vnc session terminates. My command from the ssh terminal is x11vnc -display :0 It connects to port 5900 which I tunnel to 5999, The client connects to localhost:59...

Re: uninstalled network manager

Last question would it make a difference if I uninstall my linux distro and installed it again? It often does. The fact is, first time out of the gates, users often do this. At least I did. I constantly try different flavors of Linux and, with distros that I'm not familiar with, I too resort to re-...

Re: how to record voice

I use Audacity. It takes of bit of trial and error configuring, but it's all done through the gtk interface.

I also use the pavucontrol app to help me get configurations right.

Both will be in synaptic.
