Re: Vboxusers Group

Hi, When you say not in dropdown menu, do you mean MainMenu>Preferences>UsersandGroups? If so, then something's amiss that can probably be corrected by a complete vbox remove and fresh vbox install. (I install VBox from the Oracle site and not the package manager. I also install the Oracle extension...

Re: USB Flash Drive with Random Data

Sorry,

Corrected in original reply.

sudo apt-get install gparted

The package manager is probably the best entry-level way to get this and other
packages as they are needed.

Re: USB Flash Drive with Random Data

gparted is my favorite.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gparted

run gparted (menu or ~gparted)

Easy gtk interface, Be carefull; make sure you are partitioning/formating the right disk.

Re: Hobbies, Linux and Woodworking Software

Hi,

For my old legacy Windows programs, I use Virtual Box and run a virtual Windows XP guest. You install Windows in a virtual machine then install your old programs in Windows.

Definitely give this a look. https://www.virtualbox.org/

Re: wifi default connection

Perhaps inelegant: Disable network-manager altogether. Write a script to manually connect. Assuming you use wpa: First, run ~wpa_passphrase 'your_Network_Name' 'your_wpa_passphrase' Paste the output to a new text file named myWifi.conf Create a new text file named myWifi.sh #!bin/sh cd 'your path to...

Re: newbie with a dell inspiron 9400

The 8200 is type A97 audio. My notes are very scetchy: pavucontrol* Hardware: digital stereo duplex input: will have no choices *I have found pavucontrol handy on Mint, particularly with configuring Audacity to record as I hear it sound. I have tried Puppy and a couple of other minimal distributions...

Re: Just some basic questions about setting up a WLAN

Here are two sites that describe an approach that I have used successfully: http://teh-geek.com/?p=512 http://www.ehacking.net/2012/03/how-to-create-fake-access-point.html Note that they are both being done on a distribution called Backtrack. The method works for me on Mint 13 but you need to instal...

Re: newbie with a dell inspiron 9400

I too resuscitate antique laptops and desktops, primarily because the volunteer groups I help out always seem to inherit machines that nobody loves anymore. I have one old Dell Inspiron 8200 alive and doing well. I have had Mint Mate 13 on it but later I changed the install to Backtrack R3 (Lynx par...

Re: VB snapshot stored in wrong place

Hi, Do you at all times have both stick1 and stick2 connected? A swap will not substitute one usb drive for another. Stick1 and stick2 have their own unique device UUIDs. If your VBox global settings target stick1for VM folders and stick2 is the only one connected, then VBox won't know to use stick2.

Re: Just some basic questions about setting up a WLAN

Hi,

Just a quick question. When you say you can't connect to the internet, can you ping an external ip address from your terminal? ie: ~ping 8.8.8.8

Sharing the folders is something you have to work out with Samba.

Re: VB snapshot stored in wrong place

Just to be safe, clone the VM first so you have a backup. Then, in the VB GTK under File> preferences, change the default machine folder to point to your prefered location. To get your original VM to point to your new location for future snapshots, I would first delete the existing snapshot. Then I ...

Re: Just some basic questions about setting up a WLAN

Have a look at "creating a wireless hotspot." There are many tutorials, e.g. http://exain.wordpress.com/2011/03/31/making-a-wifi-hotspot-access-point-using-linux-wifi-lan-cardusb-adapter/ You will need two adaptors on the computer that connects to the internet: one to make the connection t...

Re: Installing driver for ASUS USB-N13

OK, It looks like Asus recently changed the chip set on this device from a Ralink chip set to a Realtek chipset. The older version is known to be supported. The undertone in the community suggests that the later revision is a possible challenge. It is clear that this is the case because the device I...

Re: Installing driver for ASUS USB-N13

Great! Working is the objective. It's odd that you have no output for lsmod | grep rt2. If you want, post the entire output for lsmod. Maybe we can figure out just what driver is being used. Later, you should hack you way into the router's wireless network, just to show that your the boss. I have ha...

Re: Very General WIFI Networking Question

Hi, If using the staticly assigned DNS works, then underlying problem is with the assignment of domain name servers by the router (and ultimately the ISP). A router can be ( and usually is) configured to obtain both a WAN IP address and a DNS assignment by the DHCP. Using the DNS provided by the ISP...

Re: Installing driver for ASUS USB-N13

The Windows Wireless Drivers menu item should not be used with this adaptor (it's a dead end road). You will be using the Linux drivers. The N13 will work in Mint with native drivers and does not need the Windows Driver work-around. Also, trying to use the Windows version invariably fails. The LED t...

Re: Boot order on dual-boot systems.

I like the Ubuntu Secure Remix Live CD. It has a GUI utility called Boot Repair that is very usefull for folks with multiple images on multiple machines; particlularly when disks are swapped, etc. Your boot doesn't have to be broken to use boot repair. One of the options will let you set the defalt ...

Re: Installing driver for ASUS USB-N13

Odd. This adaptor works out of the box for me on Mint. When you plug it in does the light come on? If not, then run these two commands: sudo modprobe rt2800usb sudo modprobe rt2x00usb After running these commands, does the light come on? If still no, run; sudo lshw -c network In the output, do you s...
