NTFS Compression?

After getting fed up with 20+ hours of total transfer time, and only 7 hours more at 1.1MB/s- I flipped to XP. Then I noticed something- I had set my internal 1TB drive to compress files. When looking at the System Monitor in Mint, only 1 of my 4 cores was being used. In XP, all of them are being us...

Similar issue: USB NTFS > SATA NTFS

Unfortunately, I am having a similar problem with my USB 2.0 drive. Unlike what everyone else is experiencing, I am getting very good rates (13.5MB/s, Elyssa) but they are slowly dropping. For example, I am currently copying over a drive image from NTFS formatted external USB 250G "SimpleDrive" to m...

Re: Partial Web Access

In my quest for Linux Enlightenment, I've stumbled across this article on the Arch Linux Beginner's Guide:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Net ... ling_Issue

Could this be the answer I was looking for? I wouldn't put it past Verizon to give me some crap router.

Re: UH OH! Linux Mint AND XP BOTH Crashing! HELP!

Sorry for not replying sooner.

Apparently it was the overclock. It's back at the default now, and no issues.

Thanks for y'all's help.

Re: UH OH! Linux Mint AND XP BOTH Crashing! HELP!

I have run a disk check on both OSes and the problem still persists, though it seems less frequently. There are two things that I have changed recently. (which I think might have had something to do with it) 1. The Powersupply. My brother got a new gfx card as a gift but his PSU wouldn't support it....

UH OH! Linux Mint AND XP BOTH Crashing! HELP!

For whatever reason, bot Windows XP and my Linux Mint 5 install seem to take 2 boots to start up. The first one freezes partway through startup (or sometimes in XP it will BSoD) and the second time it will boot fine. Seems to be every time I power up. What's the deal? IS MY HARD DRIVE FAILING!? :sho...

Re: NEW BUT HAVE CERTAIN MP3 PLAYER QUESTION

Yea, I have looked into alternatives but to be honest I can't seem to get a more durable player. There are others that offer a wide variety of video formats (including open source formats) with larger, higher resolution, touch -enabled screens and even some that support changing the firmware- but no...

Re: Partial Web Access

Thank you very much for trying to hard to solve my problem. I have been running LM5 just fine as of late, and plan on doing a reinstall hopefully this weekend if not next weekend. The mtu fix looks promising, but just what is mtu!? Again, thank you so much. I probably couldn't get as much dedication...

Re: Partial Web Access

I will try it when I get the chance.

Is there a major difference between Elyssa and Felicia? It seems like all the mint-stuff was pushed through mintUpdate.

Re: Partial Web Access

Umm, what do you mean by a regression? And how, exactly, does the signing process work? -Ian EDIT- Doesn't affect Elyssa after the first 129 updates... going to see what happens for the next 205. EDIT2- Doesn't affect Elyssa after the first 129, next 205, or last 96 updates. (430 updates in all...) ...

Re: Fast and Slow Speeds

Apparently, it throttles the bandwidth to individual applications in order to ensure that you can run multiple web...

No-Upload Torrent

Just started using Transmission, the default BitTorrent client for LM6, and am having trouble uploading. I can get (slow) downloads, but no uploads. Port test in preferences passes. I disabled the firewall. What could be wrong?

Re: Fast and Slow Speeds

Thanks, I got an email from Amazon saying basically that because they deal in a larger volume of data their transfers are faster. (Meaning that they probably bribed Verizon.)

Oh well. It's still faster than many, and I'm feeling pretty optimistic ATM.

Re: Partial Web Access

I am extremely sorry for the long delay in replies. I have been too busy lately to troubleshoot this. However, I have noticed something- the internet works fully BEFORE you install Felicia's 130 updates. After the updates, this happens. Someone is feeding me a virus, and I don't care what you say ab...

Re: NEW BUT HAVE CERTAIN MP3 PLAYER QUESTION

I, too, have a M$ Zune and, I have to say, I love it. I was bitterly disappointed to learn that compatibility with Linux was limited at best. Another way you can have Zune on Linux is via a virtual machine with Windows on it. I know not everyone has copies of Windows just laying around, so this opti...

Re: Fast and Slow Speeds

Okay. Workarounds? DownThemAll (firefox dl accelerator) doesn't seem to bypass that.

Anyone know enough about how Amazon Unbox works to know how it's file transfer system works? UPDATE: I have just emailed Amazon asking how they get around these limits.)

Re: Partial Web Access

Could you suggest a site that I could try to disprove that correlation? downforeveryoneorjustme.com worked last time I checked (I think). UPDATE: Yes, it does work. I can't even connect with the LiveCD, there just aren't any networks available. And here's the weird part. Everything with a adsense ad...

Re: Fast and Slow Speeds

This has been consistent over the 2 years I've been with Verizon DSL. I don't really have another option for a connection though. I just want a workaround.
