Re: About Android... anyone aware of a lightweight alternati

I would suggest SliTaz, but I'm not sure if that works chrooted in Anroid. Anyways, it uses 35MB idle RAM and has a LLLLOOTSS of apps you can install (Libreoffice, VLC, Firefox, are just some of them...there are like 3000 apps). It uses LXDE, but man, it looks sexy if you know how to tweak LXDE...*...

ChromeOS... *shudders* lol

I really hope it's Mint ._. heh

Re: Wait.. will MATE be in Mint 14? Confused...

ah but cinnamon don't work on all hardware configurations if your graphics ar not up to it it defaults to mate But then couldn't the person just use XFCE if their hardware is old? I mean, I guess XFCE isn't quite as developed in some ways as MATE but... I dunno, it just feels like sticking around i...

Re: I think Linux has got this one :)

I agree animaguy :) I think the next few years will be very interesting for Linux particularly if Linux Mint keep up their game - I think they're the strongest out there right now by some way. Yes Ubuntu technically has more users but I think the trend is going to start to favour Mint as its approac...

Re: Wait.. will MATE be in Mint 14? Confused...

Confused, indeed. Mate is supported in Fedora 18, and that makes me think that there are a lot of people using it. As I am. It's stable, to say the least and it is familiar. I'm still not certain weather the new (well, not too old) Ubuntu dash is the right way for a normal desktop. And I'm totally ...

About Android... anyone aware of a lightweight alternative?

Like on my PC, I like XFCE as opposed to Gnome or KDE because of the speed boost. But on my mobile... I am not aware of any such alternative to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). Is this simply because phones are a bit more hardware specific and cutting edge and therefore more complex to support? If ...

Re: Wait.. will MATE be in Mint 14? Confused...

Oops. Sorry for missing you wanted to see MATE dropped. But that's not likely to happen, as MATE is an important DE for the users of Linux Mint (see outcome of Clem's poll on desktop environments: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=143&t=100787). Use what works best for you :D Yah I love C...

I think Linux has got this one :)

What do you reckon? I think Linux will eventually top OSX and Windows. I was really unsure for a while there but... Linux Mint and Android are just SO good... I reckon eventually the pressure will topple it.

Opinions? :)

Re: Wait.. will MATE be in Mint 14? Confused...

Nope. Gnome 2 was last available on Linux Mint 11 (the Ubuntu based Linux Mint editions), and this blog post is announcing it will also no longer be available in LMDE (the Debian based Linux Mint editions). MATE is a fork of Gnome 2, but it is not Gnome 2 (a fork means, it is an independent copy of...

Wait.. will MATE be in Mint 14? Confused...

Just read this blog post... http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2094 Doesn't that suggest Gnome 2 (MATE) is ending? Or is there something here I'm misunderstanding? I hope MATE does end relatively soon as I don't like it when people are like... stuck in the past! Move with the times people! I don't see you...

I think the file you want is /usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins/en-GB/yahoo.xml on Linux Mint 13. <SearchPlugin xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/browser/search/"> <ShortName>Yahoo</ShortName> <Description>Yahoo Search</Description> <InputEncoding>UTF-8</InputEncoding> <Image width="16" height=...

Linux Mint's Yahoo search string

What is it? I ask because at the moment my Firefox address bar search string is: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q= But I would ideally like to change it to the Mint Yahoo search string so as to help out Mint a bit, and super ideally would like to get it to search UK hits first and foremost, such as ...

Re: Is it just me or does XFCE look more modern than MATE?

Cinnamon had a bug that caused freezes on some systems and applications, and was very hard find and fix. This has been solved a few weeks back and is available as an update to all users since end of July. (http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=103054&start=500#p611914) Clem also touches a...

Re: Is it just me or does XFCE look more modern than MATE?

MATE has a dedicated team of developers and maintainers (http://mate-desktop.org/team/). I think their focus still is on completing the fork and fixing Gnome 2 bugs, as you can see below. I'd expect with each release going forward they will have more time to start adding the nice-to-haves  (c...

Initial tweaks when installing Mint 13 Xfce

Here are mine! Only small things :) 1) I change the Menu button logo from that strange cog to the Mint logo! (right-click it and select properties, and replace its icon with /usr/share/linuxmint/common/artwork/logos/22.png) 2) I change the shortcuts next to it to my three most used apps - Thunar, Fi...

Is it just me or does XFCE look more modern than MATE?

It definitely looks simpler but... I think the fact that Gnome 3 (Cinnamon) is getting all the new features and things so Gnome 2 (MATE) is being left behind a bit like say Windows XP is resulting in (to my eyes) MATE looking quite old now. However, XFCE is still actively maintained and modern - alb...

Re: Editing the appearance of notifications?

It's ok, I actually found the setting, and then ended up simply reinstalling as I felt like I'd played with the installation too much and wanted it fresh again lol It was in gconf-editor in Apps > Notification Daemon, although I didn't know what the name of the default theme was. I just installed gc...

Editing the appearance of notifications?

I tried installing MATE on here as well as Xfce, and ran into some issues trying to fire it up, so went back to Xfce. Everything is ok still but my notifications look different (libnotify, isn't it?). They are now white and box-like and appear at the lower right instead of translucent and black in t...

I find that Mint works so well my biggest tip would be to choose it over other distros lol :)
