You COULD try installing VirtualBox (free) and see if same problem occurs
If it does - most likely OS issue
If it does not - guaranteed VMWare issue

I'd bite the bullet and buy HD's 3tb USB HD runs about $150 on Amazon I have 9 tb of music, music videos and movies on 3 drives. If you put S.M.A.R.T monitoring on you can get heads up that a drive is getting old or starting to malfunction. If one of my drives signaled a problem, most likely it will...

I dont think so because WINE is not real windows and VirtualBox does not have access to the real BIOS
This is exactly why I keep a tiny XP partition on my machines - BIOS updates, DVD rom updates, etc
