Is Mint 17 suppose to come with a firewall?

I noticed that Mint 17 doesnt have a firewall installed. Is this normal behavior or is it for some reason my install just doesn't have one. Every other mint version i have used has had a firewall so thats why I am asking. Is it just the fact its not needed becuase i thought a firewall of some kind i...

Re: Does LVM need a /boot to install Grub?

I don't know exactly how you're doing this as the default installation option for lvm will create a /boot. but did you mount /boot before doing what you're doing :?: The default installation option wipes everything. I not sure if the boot was mounted during the installation but i think gparted said...

Re: Does LVM need a /boot to install Grub?

Incentive I.C The lvm is assembled and activated by initrd after udev is started. Therefore you can't access a /boot partition on a logical volume since the mapper device hasn't yet been pieced together. The grub kernel line will have a reference to the device mapper like root=/dev/mapper/mint--vg-...

Re: Dual Boot: Can I install Win7 after Mint17

It is possible you just have to make sure you can spare at least 1-2 primary partition. I dont belive windows inself has to be on a primary partition but its boot loader has to be. Windows bootloader overwrites Grub so you will have to go into the live cd and put Grub back on Mbr which is very easy ...

Re: Mint Firewall and online banking

...Truth is I use windows 7, without antivirus, no updates, only an "after-market" firewall. Can you believe it?  I'm serious. No problems so far. So you currently do online banking from a windoze machine without an antivirus or internet security software (other than an "aftermarket fire...

Re: Does LVM need a /boot to install Grub?

Don't know if this is a side affect from how i set it up but the package manager is having trouble installing. Its stick on running-post installation trigger initramsfs-tools in details: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-24 generic Is this because of the boot partition? My goal is...

Re: Install KDE on top of Cinnamon

G'day folks I am also interested in installing KDE desktop over a Mint 13 Mate installation on an old HP compaq nx5000 laptop (can't go above Mint 13 as pentium M processor doesn't do pae). I also have XFCE desktop installed (xubuntu-desktop) and use this mostly. I have installed Kubuntu-desktop ov...

Re: Install KDE on top of Cinnamon

You can install KDE but you don't want to do so, trust me. From my 8 years using Linux I can tell you that you don't want to mix DEs that use a different engine, that is, you don't want to mess a system with Gnome and KDE. You can install Gnome, MATE, XFCE, LXDE, MATE all together without any compa...

I have no expertise and have never installed in a VM, but, I have obviously installed on a regular machine so thought it worth mentioning this observation just in case it sounds relevant... Re: Cannot Install Maya Mate 64bit or Qiana Cinnamon 64bit

Hi Karl, Yep, it really is a dual core. From the properties menu it is an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-56. Part of the memory is being used for the ATI graphics if I remember properly. The manual has a caveat ** Above 3GB, all memory might not be available due to system source requirements. Now here ...

Re: <Solved> 32bit vs 64bit Choice

Depends if you need the extra processing power that the 64 bit can provide. 64 bit application also have a bigger memory footprint. PAE i belive does have some overhead which could cause a performance degrade but i used 32bit PAE before and i noticed no difference from 64 bit proformace wise but the...

Does LVM need a /boot to install Grub?

I have read that it needs a /boot meaning i guess it cannot install on MBR. I basically get this error eveytime grub tries to install "WARNING!! Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda2 Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda2' failed. This is a fatal error." Replace ...

Re: How to backup LM 17 with LVM installed

You can effectively use rsync for a full system backup. I've cloned a running system to a usb and with some manipulation can boot it. If you're not spanning partitions/drives with the volume manager, then you can just clone the partition with CloneZilla or dd with gzip to compress it. dd if=/dev/sd...
