Re: Cinnamon + Mate

my system is "LMDE MATE Edition" because you have mint-info-debian-mate installed most probably [/code] and tbh leave it as-is  you only need one meta-info-"DE" pkg installed. you don't need to uninstall any of the DE's (actually you can add more if you want) and if/when a pkg conflict may occ...

Re: Update Pack 5 and Grub

Yes, you can ommit installing GRUB by not selecting any disk or clicking "cancel" (I don't remember exactly).
But you don't have to install it for sure (It even warns you if you try to skip it).

Re: UP5 - Another CUPS issue ? - Samsung clp620nd

You can prevent packages from updating using dpkg

echo "package_name hold" | dpkg --set-selections

Or something like that. After that, apt-get won't update it (with all required dependencies).

To check what have you already locked:

dpkg --get-selections | grep hold

Cinnamon + Mate

Since Cinnamon and Mate editions have been separated:

Is it still safe to use both DE? I have both of them installed even though my system is "LMDE MATE Edition" since UP5.
I don't want to uninstall neither Cinnamon or Mate.
Both are working now, but I wonder if it won't cause any problems in future.

UP5 : fglrx + wine = fail

I've come across problems with running wine on UP5 with fglrx. My graphics card is HD5670. Linux 3D and Compiz works perfectly good. Video acceleration in VLC works (didn't in UP4). Windows 2D applications run just fine also, but there is no working 3D acceleration under wine (both mepis 1.5.12 and ...

Re: Create a local Repository?

You should not use apt-get upgrade with LMDE.
Just apt-get dist-upgrade.

I've resolved this problem by using private squid proxy server (had to reinstall UP5 few times due to bugs encountered), but since you don't want to run any server - this is not a solution.

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

UP5 is released, but ISO are not available for download yet. I've updated to UP5 and it works very good. But it seems like I've just discovered another important UP5 flaw :( ***There is no compiz in UP5*** (im sorry for large fonts, im just making sure Clem will not miss it!) Compiz will work as lon...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

Wow... it seems like I've reinvented the wheel while doing my little font research  But I'm glad to see that the filelist is the same there, it makes me think I haven't missed anything. so taking from that topic and the confirmation of your research  the secret is The difference with the...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

Great news. I am at work now, but I will try it on VirtualBox once I get back home.
I don't know how many files actually need to be replaced. Maybe just a few?

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

I wonder if this method works:
http://noz3001.wordpress.com/2011/07/01 ... an-wheezy/
It involves just extracting part of ubuntu deb file to /etc/fonts

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

If that's not a bug then it's alright. I had no idea about libcairo patches.
We're not using Ubuntu, so we shouldn't expect Ubuntu patches.

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

My only complaint is that UP5 is taking 3 times longer to update than it would to install and configure a fresh copy of Mint. This isn't counting the download time. Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2 Fresh copy of Mint isn't installed from packages. It is already decompressed and pre-configured....

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

I can verify this. It's the same here. A definite downgrade to font clarity. Actually, there's a definite loss of clarity in video overall using default video. I an rather dissapointed with the UP5 video presentation. It's not bad but it's not as good as it was with UP4. That's called going backwar...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

Thanks for your feedback everyone... there's a lot of support questions in here so I had to filter through and ignore most of the posts unfortunately. Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

Still, I don't think it's beyond the average LMDE user to get it by (at least temporarily) adding testing to their apt/sources.list Yep, I'm also thinking on getting testing/sid version in case of emergency through apt-pinning. But I don't think it's an elegant and supported method (for example min...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

fglrx was removed from the debian testing repo. I know it was removed due to x.org 1.12 incompatibility. But it is compatible since june and back in sid (you're right - not yet in testing) Since LMDE isn't 100% debian testing, just based on it, it would be good to put it back instead of killing off...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

Releasing UP5 in current state would probably result in a *huge* disaster. Why? Because incoming doesn't contain fglrx driver (for unknown reasons - there is fglrx 12.6 in debian testing, in debian sid, and newest version 12.9 supports even x.org 1.13 and kernel 3.5). Mint team have to be absolutely...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD

And I don't quite like it - both mate and cinnamon are different UI for gnome. It would be highly unlikely to run mate without any gnome3 components/applications (it's heading towards gtk3 anyway). On the other hand Cinnamon can be a bit unstable and having secondary rock-solid mate as a backup is n...
