Re: Install failure - 64-bit

I may have found another hint. When I try booting in recovery mood it doesn't recognize my home partition. The partitions I have are: 1. A Windows partition 2. An install of Mint Julia 64 with 2 primary partitions, swap temporarily absent, deleted and used to create... 3. An extended partition creat...

Re: Install failure - 64-bit

Thanks. I downloaded the ISO again, MD5 matched, got the same messages on boot. Will try the recovery mode remedy, later. Good to know you've been able to work around this.

Re: Install failure - 64-bit

Right you are - the md5 checksums didn't match. Will download again, burn slowly as recommended, try again, and report back. Thanks again.

Sounds like a plan - hope that's all it is. Would really like to get LMDE 64 running on that machine.

Install failure - LMDE 64-bit [SOLVED]

At some point, I'll clean up this mess - but will leave it as-is for now, in case it helps someone with the problem of LMDE not recognizing the /home partition when both SATA and IDE drives are present in the system. [LATER:] As described under #1 below, I reinstalled LMDE 64 and now it doesn't seem...

Re: Help me install Quanta+ ?

FWIW, for simple stuff I'm using Seamonkey - it has code and preview and an ftp uploader, all that's needed to make a few changes. Nothing like Quanta's power, of course, but then I don't have to load the system with all that KDE stuff.

Re: LMDE SpinX3 Wishlist

"Implement partitioner" rings a bell. I'm having trouble installing LMDE 2011-01 because the liveCD installer doesn't see my main disk. Currently I've asked for help in a separate thread; just wanted to vote for a partitioner because this hasn't been a problem with the main editions including Julia....

Seeley, thanks. LMDE 64-bit installer doesn't see my main SATA disk

I have two 160-GB Western Digital hard disks. One is a SATA boot disk that LMDE labels sdb, and the other is an IDE data disk that Mint labels sda. When i boot the 64-bit LMDE live CD, the SATA disk (sdb) doesn't appear in the installer's partition setup screen. What to do? I would like to remove Mi...

Re: How to downgrade Grub2 to Grub1?

I assume you're tracking Testing in LMDE. I plan to track Squeeze for ultimate stability, at least for a while. I've installed Linux 10 times in the last three days and I'm sick of tinkering. I think I could now set up my favorite desktop with my eyes closed. I was searching for the best stable opti...

Re: How to downgrade Grub2 to Grub1?

zerozero - thank you, thank you. I will likely re-install LMDE on the ThinkPad X32 soon, replacing Scientific Linux, and will report on my experience as I try to solve the sleep/restore issue. I can't help being curious: Your signature says "I'm going Debian." Does that mean naked Debian or LMDE? Ha...

How to downgrade Grub2 to Grub1?

I'd be grateful for your thoughts on how to downgrade Grub2 to Grub1 after installing LMDE (32-bit). Using Grub1 appears to be the easy solution to a problem with LMDE not suspending/resuming a ThinkPad X32 laptop properly. The solution worked with OpenSUSE 11.3, which uses Grub1, and I'm hoping it ...

Re: Suspend/resume broken on ThinkPad X32

I found a couple of sources with information that might solve this issue. I'll post the links here, in case others can actually follow what's said. 1. About the middle of this thread , there's promising info on tweaking settings in a quirks file. Didn't work for me, but it did for the guy who had th...

Re: Question About Updates

I'll be watching with interest. Would love to settle in and stay with LMDE, but the unsolved problem with suspend/restore has tempted me to move - temporarily I hope - to Scientific Linux (Redhat Enterprise Linux compiled from source). Can't help wondering if the Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint developers ...

Suspend/resume broken on ThinkPad X32 [SOLVED]

My ThinkPad X32 doesn't shut off the backlight when I suspend it. It also doesn't resume properly. Shutdown works normally. Had the same issue with an install of LMDE. It is a well-known Debian issue that has evidently trickled down through Ubuntu to Mint. It is a problem not just with this model of...

Re: Question About Updates

That sounds like a good choice (specify level 3) given what you say about the risks when Testing goes Stable. Thanks! What I've done: 1. Right-click MintUpdate icon in the Panel > Preferences > Levels tab > choose Levels 1-3. 2. In MintMenu, open Software Sources > LinuxMint Software tab > leave the...

Re: Question About Updates

I'm relieved, and convinced to stick with LMDE. My problems have actually been minor; they just loom large when I'm in the thick of solving them. (Another thread.) Thanks especially for the info on tracking Squeeze by changing the sources list. Will definitely do that - great info for others who wan...

Re: Question About Updates

If people pay enough attention to what they are upgrading this is pretty true.... Where LM_Ubuntu-base seems intended to hand hold, LMDE does not.... Many who come to LMDE do not seem to be beyond the point of wanting a rock solid, stable, pre-installed and configured device placed in their hands. ...

Re: MS Office 2007 play on linux file associations [SOLVED]

Had similar problems with OO and MS Word exchanging docs. OO can't open Word docs correctly with even moderately complex formatting. Would love to hear your ongoing experiences with Play on Linux and Word 2007, as it is what I would like to do. I'm resisting using Virtualbox because of the endless W...
