Re: ethernet stopped working during upgrade to Mint18

I happened to insert a live DVD Mint18 as you were posting your reaction :-)
Good news is that there is network connection with internet, bad news is that I don't know how to fix it in 17.3 and thus be able to continue the upgrade there.

ethernet stopped working during upgrade to Mint18

I was following this guide to upgrade from 17.3 to 18 http://www.tecmint.com/upgrade-linux-mint-17-to-linux-mint-18/#comments When rebooting there was no Cinnamon (there was a message it had crashed; I couldn't restore it) and even worse, no internet. I tried some of the commands from the guide agai...

Re: 2nd 23' monitor different resolution?

I looked at your first post to see if you have successfully used that monitor at 1920 on some other operating system or version of linux (?) Appears it might be an older monitor. <<>> Not a cheerful end, but maybe someone else can help. Best wishes. No I haven't used it earlier. I thank you, I2k4, ...

Re: 2nd 23' monitor different resolution?

I'll check back later (Eastern Standard Time). Good luck. Thanks, that's very kind. The padlock is gone after I did sudo chown ludo:ludo .xprofile .. On rereading your post - maybe you just "created" that resolution with your .xprofile script... It was indeed created with making the script - the ve...

Re: 2nd 23' monitor different resolution?

- put .xprofile in home/mint and right-click properties>permissions to ensure it's executable Thanks for your suggestions. I'm not sure all is right with the .xprofile, because it has an icon of a padlock on it.. I did make it executable with sudo chmod +x .xprofile Now when I repeat the command xr...

Re: 2nd 23' monitor different resolution?

Anyhow, everything is possible in Linux. Basically, it seems EDID wasn't read properly from this monitor. You need to override this with a custom modeline. You could inspect Xorg log to see what exactly went wrong with monitor detection. Does this bit make sense to you? Since it mentions the monito...

2nd 23' monitor different resolution?

Today I changed my 2nd monitor, which was a small size, to one that's about 23', just like the main monitor. It doesn't look too great, and when I go to Preferences / Display / to check what's going on, I see that the 2nd monitor is not recognized properly. It says "Unknown VGA1", but it's an AMW-mo...

Re: SSD - systemctl: command not found

Upstart controls services in Mint not systemd just like Ubuntu 14.04 from which it's based. You will have to wait until Mint18 which should be based on Ubuntu 16.04 for your command to function. There are some rudimentary systemd files in Mint17 which enable other things that depend on it to work b...

[Solved] SSD - systemctl: command not found

For SSD I read that

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl enable fstrim.timer
is a good idea, so I searched the web and found plenty of confirmations.
I went ahead and did it, but bash says:

Code: Select all

sudo: systemctl: command not found

You're so right there; and the one time that I carelessly play with an unbacked-up file of course it taught me a lesson about being negligent
And thanks for the Shutter info.

Re: easiest photo editor?

Thank you kindly for all the suggestions. I will be looking into each single one more in depth during the week. I happened to pick up a magazine in the supermarket this afternoon also, with an article about ImageMagick. That's another option added to the list. Undecided at present, but marking solve...

[Solved] easiest photo editor?

Advice wanted: The simplest editor possible for photo editing. I need to add text to a photo, that's it! So the only fancy stuff I need, is nice fonts; there's no need to edit the photo itself. Thus the lowest learning curve possible please - it's something I have to do only occasionally. In the irc...

From the first post: ... in Firefox any Google-tabs that are open keep twirling their icon (G+, Gmail, Gcal...) After resolving the chrome problem by uninstalling it and replacing it with chromium, this twirling is still happening in Firefox, so it is not related to the chrome-issue is my guess now....

Re: Update Manager keeps complaining

This is an error that everyone is getting since Google dropped support for 32 bit Chrome browser. You will get the error even if you are using the 64 bit version. There is a quick fix going around (adding [arch=amd64]) to the address, but apparently there is a script that overwrites that fix every ...

[Solved] Update Manager keeps complaining

For several days already the Update Manager-icon shows something is wrong. When I open it I see: The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. ...

Conky is in the way for desktop icon

I rarely use desktop-icons, but when I do, it's a bit cumbersome to place them right. Say I have a file called link_to_wherever.txt, and in Nemo I place that under Desktop. On the desktop it appears, but in the upper left corner, under my Conky! So now I have to disable Conky, drag & move the icon t...

Found it, yes, it's called System Tray. Thanks Cosmo! I'm glad I didn't break anything :)
