Re: jDownloader does not install correctly

He he zerozero, I followed your advice with the .sh script. Now I have 6 menu entries "jDownloader" that all do not start up the program. Doing an explicit java -jar JDownoader.jar lets the program end up with the ouput 10 08.04.13 19:00:27 - FINER [jd.JDClassLoader(<init>)] -> Look and Feel J...

Re: Where are the 50,000 packages?

Hmm, maybe it has something to do with a package for the file downloading program "jDownloader". The developers instructed me to issue sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jd-team/jdownloader and then to get the package with apt-get and apt-update, but it did not work. You can see the efect at the end of the...

Where are the 50,000 packages?

Hello, when I open the softwaremanager, it says that there are 2332 packages available. I did not change anything concerning the package sources/repositories. I have read that Debian, on which LMDE is built, has 50,000 packages. Now I wonder what I have to do to make these packages available. For ex...

jDownloader does not install correctly

Hello, I've tried to install jDownloader from http://jdownloader.org/download/index (the multi-OS-zip). Well, I installed it under /opt, but when I started it, the GUI never came up. So I threw away everything. What's left now are three unnecessary entries under Menu->Internet->jDownloader How can I...

MATE does not remember mp4 as file extension

When I open an mp4 file and I go through right click -> open with application -> choose VLC -> remember this association, I got Totem again and again. Every other file type works. This drives me nuts.

Re: No updates since weeks

Since weeks, thunderbirds pops up a window saying "new update to 17.0.4" is available. When I press the update button, nothing happens. Also the LMDE updater does not update to a newer version. How can this be explained?

Re: No updates since weeks

Thank you for the fast reply. When I decided to use LMDE for my main laptop, I was appealed by the statement that "I never have to upgrade the system again by a new install" (or something similar, dealing with a "rolling distribution"). So the question is: When do I have to do something at all? This...

No updates since weeks

I got no updates since many weeks by the updater applet in the system tray.(?)

And can somebody please point me to a good explanation of the difference between update/upgrade/dist-upgrade in general and what it means especially for LMDE?

Looking for an easy backup tool

I'm looking for a very simple tool that just makes a compressed tarball (.tgz) of my /home once a week and stores it under, say, /var/tmp/backup. It should also run if I hadn't switched my machine on on that particular backup day. I know I could do this with cron-jobs and shell scripts but why inven...

Re: Why is LMDE still using Skype v2.1?

Because somewhere in the jungle of this forum, when asking for "skype on Linux Mint", I found a posting that said: Include the following line in your sources list: deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free Now I have ziegler@nc10:~$ LANG=C apt policy skype skype: Installed: 2...

Re: What is the difference between Debian, Fluxbox, XFCE, ..

Hey Robin,

excellent answer! Can you tell me the difference between MATE and Cinnamon? Are these WMs or DEs? Which one has the lower memory/time consumption? I'd like to keep the good old desktop parardigm.

S.

PS: After 15 years of using KDE, I have stopped. It is too buggy and too time consuming

Re: How to add German Wikipedia in Firefox' search engine li

Thank you!!! Works like a charm... I wonder why I could not get there from http://www.linuxmint.com/searchengines.php IMHO, the section "Other search engines" is nonsense, at least if there is not a link like the one you gave me. I have normally no problems in installing search engines for firefox. ...

Re: No updates within 5 weeks?

Thank you, xenopeek. This reminds me of my French course in school: "On n'a jamais fini d'apprendre" ("One has never stopped learning"). And yes, it's an obfuscated manual. I was able to find the LANG-variable on http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bashref.html#Bash-Variables, but I did not find...

Re: No updates within 5 weeks?

I followed zerozero's advice and executed
# mint-choose-debian-mirror
as described on http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 5&t=112047
I selected the (currently) fastest server (somewhere in Italy, I dwell in Germany) and wooosh - I got an update without error messages.
