Re: can not get mint to install from my DVD rom drive

If you're pressing the key for entering SETUP or BIOS first, it'll go into that. You need to make sure you're only hitting the key for editing the Boot Device Order (usually F12). Then once in the Boot Device Order area, just select USB CD/DVD. Now, if you are just going into the BIOS, you can also ...

Re: Mint13 Maya install help

Can I re-put Mint13 Maya on my computer without loosing my data? Yes, if you have your /home folder separated from the OS. Read here on how that's done >> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving Often times though, it can be easier to either save off your data to an external HDD ...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

The question for me after Microsoft stop supporting XP was do I feel victimized as a consumer in being forced to buy new hardware, and software in order to remain competitive in college, which requires a heavy dependence on internet access? The short answer is ... yes. It also led me to question Mi...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

I had three reasons for choosing Linux Mint. I was confident it would run smoothly on my 9-yo computer. It appeared to offer the things I want, need and expect. But what really determined my choice; the real reason I chose Linux Mint was … the forums. I like the Linux Mint forums better than the ot...

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts in LM17 KDE

On the KDE menu type "keyboard" and choose "custom shortcuts" Click the arrow next to "examples" in the left panel to expand it then make sure "Run Konsole" is selected. That will take care of terminal. This was spot on, thank you! Now to see if I can get the Windows key to bring up the M...

Keyboard Shortcuts in LM17 KDE

Hey guys - I recently installed LM17 KDE on my machine (previously ran LM17 Cinnamon) to give the KDE desktop a go. I had a couple of quick questions regarding the keyboard shortcuts I used to use in other LM variants, and really any version of Linux I've run before. 1) The "Windows" key does not br...

Re: apt-get dist-upgrade safe?

As Pat said, they are available in the Mint Updater, you just have to tell it to give you those. Clem noted that all security updates (mainly internet ones) are giving to you as soon as they're available in Ubuntu basically. I always use the command line as well, and always run a dist-upgrade too :m...

Re: KDE LM 17 great but went back to KDE LM 13. Why?

Yea, the Ubuntu/Mint resume from sleep issue is very annoying, and actually the main reason I don't use my Linux laptop for work. I too have to shutdown after every session (LM17 Cinnamon). Funnily enough, it worked fine on LM13, but every Mint since has failed (14,15,16,17....I try them all lol). I...

Re: Chat about Mint 17 Mate vs. Cinnamon

I use Mate. Cinnamon is OK but it breaks some of the basic rules of a good User Interface. e.g. All its themes have bright white background only . It hurts my eyes, I can only look at it for 2 mins max. I use LM17 Cinnamon on my laptop and I use a black-glass theme...I agree that the bright all-whi...

Re: Mint KDE vs KDE

What I don't understand (never been in the KDE realm) is why did they release KDE Plasma 5, yet they just released 4.14 Beta 2 after...are they still going to develop in the 4.XX area even after releasing 5?

Re: Chat about Mint 17 Mate vs. Cinnamon

Exactly what I was thinking Winter lol, Spearmint's stream of consciousness  To your discussion, I prefer the look and features of Cinnamon, but if I have a netbook or low-spec hardware I love using MATE. I know Xfce is good too, but MATE seems to be more actively developed, whereas Xfce hasn't...

Re: whisker menu

Might be best to post this in the Xfce-specific board >> http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=57 So you did a clean install of LM17 Xfce RC? If you just did it, I'd even suggest using the official release instead of the RC and starting over. I know they're supposed to be the same, but I've ne...

Re: Install Mate or Cinnamon desktop after doing xfce instal

Exactly, great info from WharfRat. I've always cautioned people about installing multiple DE's on one system. They often have their own dependencies that you wouldn't have, as well as they can break a system that is working perfectly fine. If you want/need multiple DE's, always use them on non-produ...

Re: KDE on new mint 17

I believe, although I'm not 100% sure bc I'm the only user on my PCs lol, that it would mess up other users if it messed up the one. The DE's aren't user specific per say, all users would have the option to use whatever DE's are available from the login screen. I believe you can restrict users to no...

You can export your bookmarks for your browser Or If you use Google Chrome, just sign in with your Google account and they'll all move over Or If you use the newest version of Firefox (either 29 or 30 I believe), you can now create a sync account in order to do the same thing just like Chrome Your f...

Re: returning to cinnamon

A few things here: 1) Did you just install the MATE DE on top of Cinnamon? If so, just make the switch before you log in >> http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1079 2) Like seeley said, LM16 will be end-of-support next month. It would be best to save off all your documents you don't wish to...
