Re: Installing on external HD

Also, I would like to split this drive in half, part linux partitions and part NTFS for getting files off my Windows box. Should I partition it first in Windows or In Linux? You can do that. It's straightforward to install linux to an external USB device. As for the partitioning, it doesn't matter....

@deepakdeshp is correct, if a little unclear.

You cannot use TimeShift to backup your entire system. To do that you need to use a disk imaging tool. Many people here recommend Clonezilla Live.

Re: Long boot Mint 19 on Toshiba L750 with Samsung SSD and NVidia Graphics

I hope the report that the Samsung SSD drive is a complete disaster with Linux Mint is not true (anymore ?). It's absolutely false and always has been. Re: Funniest Linux error message

I like the kernel's various dazed and confused messages. Best generic error/exception handler ever. Also a classic: ERROR: Root device mounted successfully, but /sbin/init does not exist. Bailing out, you are on your own now. Good luck. While looking up the dazed and confused messages I found this:...

but at this rate we'd end up turning your xenial into cosmic  lol - that's what I was afraid of :) That appstream thing is a good example to see how much support Ubuntu is actually providing though. They didn't patch the bionic version, either, only cosmic. By the way, since the appstream issu...

I gave it a shot but undid it because I ended up with 1500+ packages to update :) I guess a manual download wouldn't hurt. Did you forget to run the following part of my suggestion? sudo printf "Package: *\nPin: release a=cosmic\nPin-Priority: 400" > /etc/apt/preferences.d/cosmic.pref apt update ap...

Re: Screen flicker and tearing

How would 18.3 (xenial) go with that, using a cosmic repo to get Ubuntu kernels? He was on bionic. But kernels are self-contained, you can use them with any release, theoretically (any incompatibilities would from stem from the kernel, not the packaging). I would however suggest to also upgrade the...

Seems this problem needs coding assistance from the Mint team developers in coordination with the PIA folks.
If they provide .ovpn files then download those an import them. You don't need their dedicated VPN client.

the kernel Security Issue is, in my opinion, Grossly Over worked with Paranoia.
Until you get hax0red. Nevertheless you're right, there is no real reason to update anything if everything is running fine.
