Opera install chokes

I tried to install Opera in Bianca gnome with Add/Remove, but installation was refused because another installed program conflicts with Opera. If I want to proceed, I have to be in some Advanced mode, which I couldnt understand, as there was no "Advanced" button. This means I am locked in to a singl...

upgrade xine engine for totem

Now that feisty is out, can you upgrade the xine engine for totem. It is especially critical to enjoyable DVD playback with Totem that the xine engine be xine-lib 1.1.4 I experienced this audio-video synchronization problem in another distro, and upgrading the xine engine fixed the sync bugs. I also...

I changed out the DVDrom drive from that sorry Toshiba SDM1212 to a LiteON JLMS XJ-HD166S. The reviews I read dont have much good to say about the LiteON, but it's playing CDs with Sound Juicer, and anything else I throw at it. So now I have the defaults set to play CD with Sound Juicer, and DVD wit...

I just got XMMS to make a sound. If I could find the actual location of the CD in the file system, I am certain I could play it, reaching XMMS with the selection of "Open with other application"... but I cant find the cd, or cdrom, in the file system! BTW, you can set XMMS to play Digital Audio Extr...

If I am gonna be limited to using VLC, maybe I should be asking how to set VLC to the default CD player. Cuz right now, Sound Juicer comes up by default, and SJ doesnt work. I still cant get XMMS (Debian) to play a CD.

How do I set VLC to be the default CD player?

I installed VLC and it plays CDs flawlessly. VLC also plays DVDs passably, with some sync error, which is almost unnoticeable. MPlayer does a good job playing DVDs. Totem, on the other hand, had major sync problems playing DVDs, and the buggy xine engine will probably not be upgraded to xinelib 1.1....

command for cpu temp, cpu fan speed

I am running Bianca on an Athlon 1400 system, and this processor runs very hot. I need to monitor the cpu temp, as well as cpu fan speed. In GTK+, one command is gkrellm , but that interface is a bit tedious. Is there a command for gnome that calls the cpu temp, the value that you see in BIOS. I wan...

CD playback with Sound Juicer is choppy

I am experiencing intermittent breaks in sound, 1-second dropouts every 5 seconds, when playing commercial CDs with Sound Juicer. I have installed XMMS Player (Debian), but I dont know how to force it to play a CD. Usually, I can get a CD to play with XMMS if I select Play Location and enter /mnt/cd...

sync bugs in xine-lib 1.1.2

xine-lib 1.1.2 has known sync bugs. One remedy is to upgrade to xine-lib 1.1.4 This fixes audio-video sync bugs, but the later version of xine engine does not play Real media files. So while you fix the sync bugs in DVD playback, you might also lose playback of Real audio and video files. (If totem ...

how-to change menu

found it at DistroWatch: If you don't like the default menu, (which I initially did not like and still have mixed feelings about); Right-Click on "Bianca" on the Panel and select "Remove from Panel". Bingo! It's gone. Right-Click on an open spot on the panel and select "Add to Panel", scroll down an...

I was reading a review of Mint Bianca, and one commenter provided a clear detailed procedure for changing the SLAB-type menu back to classic Gnome. I would like to recover that procedure. Can anyone give me a link to the article? Would someone in Mint forums kindly provide a detailed procedure for c...

shutdown issue, need tutorial

I have experienced a final shutdown hang over several distributions on this box. All *buntu , Vector, Mint, none of them will shut down this standard Intel chipset P3 1000mhz. I would give more info, except I havent figured out where the sys info utility is in Bianca. MSI 815 PRO (aka MS-6326) mothe...

Usability studies, huh. That sounds like something Microsoft would do. In fact, SLAB kinda resembles Windows XP. Hah! Voila. Actually, I first used Windows XP around a year ago. I held out that long. First thing I did was change Control Panel to Classical View. That's what I thought of the new wowie...

Bianca first impressions

I just spoke to a friend who knows a lot about Linux, and he was vexed as I am that Bianca comes out so soon after the release of Bea. What exactly is the release cycle for Mint.? I understood that Mint follows the releases of Ubuntu, making the cycle, what, six months. Okay, so say I wanna stick wi...

Bianca first impressions

I regret I didnt comment on Mint Bea. The aesthetics of that version were near perfection, in a word, awesome. It never occurred to me that I should try Ubuntu, Gnome and the rest, as I was happy with Kubuntu (+Automatix). But Mint changed my mind. I couldnt handle Ubuntu, were it not for Mint Bea. ...
