Re: Create a user with absolutely no admin capability?

Up until now, I've never needed more than one user, so this is (relatively) new territory for me.

I'll try what you suggest and see what happens.

Thanks!

Re: Create a user with absolutely no admin capability?

This is different than the original user created during installation?

AFAIK, user (users?) I create inherit these capabilities by default - or do I misunderstand this?

Create a user with absolutely no admin capability?

Greetings! Question: I want to install Mint on a system for my 8 and 10 y/o granddaughters. However, I want to create a user(s) for them that is completely devoid of ANY administrative capabilities whatsoever. No "sudo". No "enter your password to change system features". No updates. No Synaptic. Ju...

Cinnamon's desktop interface is rendered with openGL - i.e it needs 3D graphics acceleration capability.
Silly question:
Why does the Cinnamon desktop "need" 3D graphics? Or is there another sequel to TRON that I haven't heard of yet?

Re: is MATE lighter than Cinnamon?

----------------------------- * Insane challenges: The most insane system I ever tried to resurrect was a 90's vintage Toshiba Libretto 50CT , with 8 megs (?) of RAM and a 6.something inch screen that was released back when Windows '95 was Bleeding Edge. I got it to run Damn-Small, but barely. It w...

Re: is MATE lighter than Cinnamon?

Update here: I ran 19.2 Cinnamon on a brand new, BLEEDING EDGE HP ProBook 450 G6, with 16 gigs of memory and a lightning fast Intel i5 processor. I ran it as a "live" CD running from a USB-3 32 gb thumb-drive, installed using Pendrive Linux's "YUMI" multi-boot installer. Running on this system, it c...

Silly me. . . I believed that the UI knew what it was doing.
🙄🤔

I've been busy this last few days updating my thumb drive images and I will test to confirm/disprove your results - and I will report my findings back here.

Re: Live install screen-saver locked me out! [censored Martian curse-words!!]

On every live system I've seen, it will, repeat will, lock if you don't disable it.

I use a lot of 32 bit images because they work on both kinds of systems - primarily for testing and troubleshooting.

19.2, Cinnamon, 32 bit still has the same issue. Screen saver is set to lock the machine down tight as a drum.

Re: Live install screen-saver locked me out! [censored Martian curse-words!!]

Update: 18.3 shows the screensaver settings, both set to "lock" I haven't been able to get 19.2* to successfully boot off my thumb-drive, so I can't talk about that - yet. *(or whatever the latest is,I downloaded it today) I don't know about raising elephants, but I did do a force-shutdown by pressi...

Re: Change default window size when opened

Smurphos, Let me clarify this for everyone out there in our Television Audience. . . I have two terminal window launchers set up. One is a normal, plain-vanilla terminal the way they normally work. The other is the exact same thing except that instead of something like "terminalcommand" I sub...

Re: Change default window size when opened

Yep.

Silly me, I gotta stop running those GUI apps.

You know, useless stuff like Gparted, kuser, Synaptic, update manager and - God help me - that damned root terminal. It'll get you every time!

Excellent! Now all you have to do is update the picture: https://linuxmint.com/tmp/blog/3528/thumb_mini2_2.png <off-topic> (I'd love if you could append this to the comments on that page) I read the comments on this blog, and - quite frankly - I really wish I could reach out and SMACK some of the pe...

Re: Change default window size when opened

Unless a window size geometry is explicitly set by the application the default behaviour for Cinnamon/Muffin is to open in the same state as when the window was last closed. So Close a browser maximised it will re-open maximised. Close it windowed it will reopen windowed. Smurphos, In my original p...

Re: Mint Box links stale?

Linux Mint does not run ads for itself on the website, so this isn't something we control. We can't place from where the ad could be. Should anyone see this ad again, could you take as screenshot and share it? They're easy to get. Just go to the main Mint web page and look at the bottom large-box a...

Re: Change default window size when opened

Do you have maximus (check in synaptic) or the maximus applet (check in Cinnamon settings) installed? If so remove/disable it. Nope. At least not explicitly. Is it installed by default? ("Default" of the distribution package maintainer? ) My installs are always pure stock installs with the f...

Re: Mint Box links stale?

Don't remove it, update it! We want people to have an opportunity to do things to help support Mint. BTW, does Mint's site generate "pay-by-click" ad revenue? I hope so, because though I may not need hosting in the UK, nor be able to afford the few hundred for the latest Mint box, I like to do some ...
