Re: "Insane" 8x Mint install with coordinated boot?

I don't have any real input, just a question (that wasn't covered in the wall of text... I think). Ouch! Is there any particular reason why you don't just install multiple desktop environments per partition? I've heard that KDE doesn't play well with others (particularly Cinnamon), but you c...

"Insane" 8x Mint install with coordinated boot?

Greetings! Before we even get started, let me say that I am already aware that what I am asking is not only an "edge case" but very likely OVER the edge as well! And if you want to say that I am a sick, twisted little man after reading this, you won't be the first. :D This trip into Alice's W...

Re: The Mint 15 joke

In a blog article I wrote, (http://www.qatechtips.com/2011/03/update-to-my-open-letter-to-ubuntu.html) where I expressed disapproval with the way Ubuntu was taking their desktop, I mentioned that one of the primary goals of any good Linux distribution, and Linux in general, is to woo use...

Re: The Mint 15 joke

One comment I would like to make: I see it said quite often that Mint is particularly good for Windows refugees but once you get past the Cinnamon or MATE desktop, the system setting and other Mint Tools are very much unlike Windows and far closer to Apple's OSX. I can say this with some authority ...

Re: How I chose. What I like & want. - A newbie's experience

Razz, I don't want to say "Well, welcome to Linux pal. . . You've really done it this time!" in a sarcastic manner, though it feels like that at times. As you have discovered, Linux isn't Windows. Neither is the Mac Windows. I guess the best way to describe what has happened to you is...

Re: The Mint 15 joke

Sigh. . . . . At the risk of beating yet another dead horse, let me toss in my two centavos, and support the idea of emphasizing the LTS releases, with the intrim releases being less obvious. My thoughts: First, before anyone gets their hackles up, I think that Mint is one of the absolute best Linux...

How to disable the boot splash screen

Greetings! In what appears to be a reversal of most of the questions here, I want to DISABLE the boot-time splash screen. It's not that I do not LIKE the splash screen, its because I greatly prefer to see the "endless lines of text" during boot - especially of a server - as I can see what is happeni...

Re: Mint 14,Mate and Cinnamon edition: which one is more sta

Greetings! In the same vein as the others, I have both a "problem" and a question. First of all, let me say that, IMHO, Ubuntu reached it's evolutionary peak with 8.n, and it's been all down hill since then. Also, IMHO, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was the last usable version. I wanted away from Ubuntu, but did...

Where to post questions/issues about the forum itself?

Please accept my apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, I did look and could not find anything that looked appropriate. Issue : "You cannot post again so soon after posting" (or something like that) Supporting Information : 1. I have been around the block at least twice, and yes, I do kn...

Change default window size when opened

First of all : I discovered Mint/Cinnamon, when Linux Format crowned it King of the Distributions. Since I was becoming increasingly unhappy with where Ubuntu was heading, (The Twilight Zone?), I wanted a change. Mint 13 and now Mint 14 has now become my Linux of Choice - and I have discovered that...

Mint as a thin server platform?

First : I have already spent a considerable amount of time researching these fora with respect to this topic prior to posting. I woud gratefully appreciate not getting replies like "Go to Ubuntu and. . ." If I wanted to do this under Ubuntu, I would not be posting here. Additionally, I have already...

Re: Why Can't You Host Your Own Domain Names?

Short answer: Of course you can host your own domain. You just cannot be your own domain registrar. Longer answer: It depends on what you mean by "host". If you are talking about moving from a fee-for-service hosting company that provides server services, you absolutely can provide the physical serv...

Re: Better than Google, looking for best search engine

Actually, all these suggestions are good ones - and like one of the earlier replies said, it's really a matter of taste. IMHO, rather than use a single search engine - like Google, yahoo, or bing - I prefer a meta-serch site that searches a whole host of search engines. The two I can recommend are d...

Re: Mint 13 Live CD/DVD hangs during boot

(shaking head in wonder) I can't believe that NOT A SINGLE PERSON tried the Mint 13 live CD/DVD on a system with an NVIDIA card prior to release? You'd think that trying a RC with different brands of video cards would be test #2, right after the "Verify optical disk does not burst into roaring flame...
