Web Site Enhancement: Reduce sensitivity of "common words" filter

Issue: When conducting a search on these fora, the search engine often selects and throws away words that are essential elements of the query because they are "common words". A specific example in point: Today I am experiencing a problem with certain windows not respecting the screen boundaries and ...

Mint 19 bug? - Drive not cleanly unmounted - Windows not shut down properly

Greetings! I just downloaded the most recent Mint 19 downloads (Cinnamon and MATE, both 32 and 64 bit) as of this instant date (August 2nd, 2018) and I have encountered what may be a boot bug. System: Win7 Professional 64 bit dual boot with Mint 18.2 (64 bit, I think) After properly shutting down Wi...

Re: [Solved] What happened to the Mint 19 download checksums?

No worries, happens to the best of us. I'm known for not finding things in my own fridge. My wife complains about the same thing. I made the mistake of leaving one of my W.E.B. (Griffith?) " Semper Fi! " books out and my wife found it. She found some of the salty quarter-deck comments that al...

Re: What happened to the Mint 19 download checksums?

For Cinnamon, the links are near the bottom of this page: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3597 Like I said, my eyeglasses need cleaning! Seriously - I remember the checksums being at the top of the page, before the list of release platforms and mirrors. Not sure, but didn't they redesign the download...

[Solved] What happened to the Mint 19 download checksums?

Greetings! First and foremost - I do not wish to complain about the distributions. I am amazed at all the hard work Clem and everyone else puts in to make them happen. Even at their worst, it is a herculean task that deserves our respect and thanks. My question is this: Where are the MD5 and SHA1/25...

Don't I wish.

I sent them links to a number of local stores that sell nice refurbs for a couple of hundred dollars (US) and these guys don't want to do it.

I've tried Puppy before, and it would be nothing but trouble with these people.

Thanks!

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

@FreedomTruth @NickByford @Everyone_Else It appears that the real tipping point is the 512meg memory boundary. If you have more than 512 megs, (768+ megs?), your user experience, though potentially lacking, is at the very least acceptably usable. In my case the memory was constrained to 512 meg and ...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

"horror show" is more like it in ny case. (grin!)

As it is, though I am trying to learn Russian, I mostly speak English to the granddaughters since everyone wants them to learn English.

Nu, vwi govorite pah russki! Horror show! ;) Ya nay govoryou pah russki gla minoga god. Sigh. . . . If you'd written that in RUSSIAN , I could have run it through Google Translate. Slick!

The things you learn on these fora - darned if I wish I'd known about that before. . . .

Thanks for the tip.

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

Agreed again! That is why I did not recommend it for your described user case; just mentioned it as an example of things that I've been trying. :) You sound like you have the same kind of twisted sense-of-humor as I. Sometime when the grandkids in Russia let me loose, (and I'm aimlessly wandering a...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

What is "MX 16"? Sounds like a semi-automatic weapon. Aren't they illegal in the Netherlands? Not this one . :-) Took a peek. Read some reviews. (Viz., https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/mx-16.html ) Decided it was a bit too wonky for the un-initiated. Reminds me of an Arch linux install wi...

Pre-Load Mint for an "Offline" install?

Greetings Earthlings! Issue: While working on installing Mint on an older system, (Viz., Mint on low-end hardware? ), I have run into an issue where I cannot do a direct install onto the target system since the CD-ROM device isn't working and an external thumb-drive won't boot if the system sees a h...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

It really doesn't make sense to provide a system that can't handle a common web request. I agree. My personal benchmark is the Ikea homepage; if it can load that without going belly up, it can be useful. I have one such system that I tried many combinations of OS and browser on... and it turns out ...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

If it doesn't have to be Mint: Lubuntu or LinuxLite . Truth be told, usability on the internet will be limited... webpages have gotten so much more demanding. . . . . and that's one of the real limiting factors. It really doesn't make sense to provide a system that can't handle a common web request...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

I would install Mint MATE or the XFCE version. Assume the following conditions exist: 1. System is relatively ancient. (Win-XP vintage, with a 32 bit CPU) May need SSE2 in it. Hopefully has PAE in it, or will need to add a bypass for that in the boot line. 2. Memory is limited. System can have anyw...

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

I don't have the technical know-how to support Linux as a developer so just wanted to say thanks to everyone who does, it really is appreciated! :D @Everyone: I do have some technical know-how - and I know just enough about coding to get in serious trouble.  (emoji of computer with mu...
