Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

Agreed again! That is why I did not recommend it for your described user case; just mentioned it as an example of things that I've been trying. :) You sound like you have the same kind of twisted sense-of-humor as I. Sometime when the grandkids in Russia let me loose, (and I'm aimlessly wandering a...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

What is "MX 16"? Sounds like a semi-automatic weapon. Aren't they illegal in the Netherlands? Not this one . :-) Took a peek. Read some reviews. (Viz., https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/mx-16.html ) Decided it was a bit too wonky for the un-initiated. Reminds me of an Arch linux install wi...

Pre-Load Mint for an "Offline" install?

Greetings Earthlings! Issue: While working on installing Mint on an older system, (Viz., Mint on low-end hardware? ), I have run into an issue where I cannot do a direct install onto the target system since the CD-ROM device isn't working and an external thumb-drive won't boot if the system sees a h...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

It really doesn't make sense to provide a system that can't handle a common web request. I agree. My personal benchmark is the Ikea homepage; if it can load that without going belly up, it can be useful. I have one such system that I tried many combinations of OS and browser on... and it turns out ...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

If it doesn't have to be Mint: Lubuntu or LinuxLite . Truth be told, usability on the internet will be limited... webpages have gotten so much more demanding. . . . . and that's one of the real limiting factors. It really doesn't make sense to provide a system that can't handle a common web request...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

I would install Mint MATE or the XFCE version. Assume the following conditions exist: 1. System is relatively ancient. (Win-XP vintage, with a 32 bit CPU) May need SSE2 in it. Hopefully has PAE in it, or will need to add a bypass for that in the boot line. 2. Memory is limited. System can have anyw...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

...since you referenced those... 1) besides being a security risk as already mentioned above, i also think that the Maya repositories aren't even online anymore (someone to correct me if i'm wrong)... 2) Damn Small Linux has been discontinued since many years now... Good points, but I was trying to...

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

I don't have the technical know-how to support Linux as a developer so just wanted to say thanks to everyone who does, it really is appreciated! :D @Everyone: I do have some technical know-how - and I know just enough about coding to get in serious trouble.  (emoji of computer with mu...

Mint on low-end hardware?

:D  I'm trying not to laugh while I'm typing this. . . . Assume the following conditions exist: 1. System is relatively ancient. (Win-XP vintage, with a 32 bit CPU) 2. Memory is limited. System can have anywhere between 256 megs to 1 gig RAM 3. Limited hard drive capacity: 20 gig or so IDE/AT...

Microsoft Flight Simulator - STEAM Edition on Mint?

Greetings! I have noticed two things: 1. Supposedly Linux Mint includes STEAM. 2. Microsoft Flight Sim X now has a STEAM edition that isn't very expensive. Obviously, the STEAM edition of MSFS is intended to run on Windoze. Question: In specific: Because there is a STEAM edition of MSFS, does that m...

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

Greetings again, Earthlings! I realize that I already wrote a book about this in a previous posting to this topic and all of it is still 100,000% true. However, after reading a number of other replies I wanted to step-up yet again and thank both the maintainers and the various forum contributors. As...

@rene

Thanks!

I've been trying to figure this stuff out for ages as the usual literature assumes that you already know the stuff.

Re: How to implement an "Are you root?" test in a shell script

You may want to replace the second line with following to relaunch the script with all arguments passed to it [. . .]: #!/bin/sh [ $(id -u) -eq 0 ] || exec sudo "$0 $*" Cute! I like it ! Great user experience handling the error - doesn't get pissy but just requests the process elevation needed. I'm...

Re: Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

Obviously I can't argue with your experiences, since I've never seen them. The worst I've seen is an install that crossed multiple hard drives, with multiple boot environments, where I wanted each environment to be able to move both backward and forward through the boot menus, one to the other. Comp...

Re: Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

This is interesting. I have never borked a system beyond repair with GC. Hand editing the configuration files? Yes. GC? no. The worst case would be needing to re-edit the files using a live CD, running grub-update and then grub-install. IMHO if you are creating multiple partition, multiple hd instal...

Re: Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

Cosmo, I will agree with you in one respect, Grub Customizer can bork a system beyond all recognition. Of course, so can Parted, DD, or even rm -rf if not careful. You are also correct in the contention that 99.99999. . . . .99999% of the Linux users - even the high-powered mondo-size server users -...

Re: Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

I remember a few more than that, but maybe I'm thinking of an earlier release. I'd love to see GParted included on the Cinnamon and Mate releases, as well as Grub-Customizer, even though it's on a private PPA. Quite frankly, I'd love to see that moved to the default repositories! If I think of somet...

Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

Greetings: Note: This enhancement request applies particularly to the Cinnamon and Mate editions, to the extent that it applies to the other editions - KDE, Xfce, etc. that's OK too. Enhancement Request: Allow, or create an installation option for, the installation of the system utilities located on...

Re: Download and *save* a package instead of installing it?

@Cosmo Now I understand. Thank you. Sometimes I am a little slow until my 4th cup of coffee. We are in Europe always several cups in front of you. And in Moscow Russia, the recipe for coffee is this: 1. Make sure the residue from last nights party has been removed. 2. Check freezer for bottl...
