Re: Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

This is interesting. I have never borked a system beyond repair with GC. Hand editing the configuration files? Yes. GC? no. The worst case would be needing to re-edit the files using a live CD, running grub-update and then grub-install. IMHO if you are creating multiple partition, multiple hd instal...

Re: Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

Cosmo, I will agree with you in one respect, Grub Customizer can bork a system beyond all recognition. Of course, so can Parted, DD, or even rm -rf if not careful. You are also correct in the contention that 99.99999. . . . .99999% of the Linux users - even the high-powered mondo-size server users -...

Re: Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

I remember a few more than that, but maybe I'm thinking of an earlier release. I'd love to see GParted included on the Cinnamon and Mate releases, as well as Grub-Customizer, even though it's on a private PPA. Quite frankly, I'd love to see that moved to the default repositories! If I think of somet...

Enhancement Request: Distribution with all utilities installed?

Greetings: Note: This enhancement request applies particularly to the Cinnamon and Mate editions, to the extent that it applies to the other editions - KDE, Xfce, etc. that's OK too. Enhancement Request: Allow, or create an installation option for, the installation of the system utilities located on...

Re: Download and *save* a package instead of installing it?

@Cosmo Now I understand. Thank you. Sometimes I am a little slow until my 4th cup of coffee. We are in Europe always several cups in front of you. And in Moscow Russia, the recipe for coffee is this: 1. Make sure the residue from last nights party has been removed. 2. Check freezer for bottl...

Re: Download and *save* a package instead of installing it?

Personal remark: A fine example which demonstrates, that any idea to drop synaptic in favor for mintinstall would be a regression. Not the only one. I certainly agree. Austin, Though I entirely agree with Cosmo's comments, I really can't take credit for them! The corrected quote is noted above. Wit...

Re: Download and *save* a package instead of installing it?

When you install a program, the .deb files needed are downloaded into the /var/cache/apt/archives/ folder. You can copy those .deb files to a different Mint with no problem - I do it with every new installation. Simply back them up to a flash drive and place them in the new /var/cache/apt/archives/...

Re: Download and *save* a package instead of installing it?

Thanks!

Having done that - creating the script and downloading all the package files - what do I have to do to install them? AFAIK neither apt-get nor Synaptic allow a change of path.

Download and *save* a package instead of installing it? [SOLVED]

Greetings! Version: Mint 18.1. Cinnamon, Mate and KDE desktops, free and non-free. Issue: 1. I am presently at a location where the download speeds are nothing less than abysmal. ( i,e, "modem" speed connections are not unusual.) As a result, downloading and installing relatively small packages can ...

Re: Kernel Panic? (black screen with caps lock and scroll lock flashing)

Interesting! I have to admit that this sounds more like a Windows machine rather than Linux. . . Seriously, I have seen things like this before, and yes, it can be scary. "Holy Christmas, Batman!" Especially if it's a business and this machine is running their only copy of their custom...

Re: PCIe sata adapter card

Greetings! It may not be a hardware issue, especially since the drive/card works in Windows without a hitch. I have had similar issues with a StarTech PEXESAT32 card using a Marvell chipset, that appears to be an issue with the AHCI "inbox" controller driver in Fedora/Ubuntu flavors of Linux. I disc...

Re: Half Speed SSD performance

Bumparocky, Based on your description of both the card, and the symptoms, I suspect that your issue may be related to the issue I've been having with a StarTech eSATA controller card. I have a StarTech PEXESAT32, (which I believe is part of the same family of cards as yours, and may use the same / s...

Re: External USB3 HDD not showing

al35mm, Are you using the same system / same controller card with both OS's? I have run into situations where a particular controller card would not work with drives larger than 2T. There are also issues with whatever dock you are using - as some docks cannot handle drives larger than 2T. Example: I...

StarTech 2 port PCI express SATA/eSATA port-multiplier inop / slow access speed

Issue : When using a StarTech PEXESAT32 (also applies to the StarTech PEXSAT32), using the Marvell-88SE9128 chipset, the port-multiplier functionality does not work. Issue : When using the above mentioned cards, the data transfer speeds are abysmally slow. I suspect that this issue is related to, a...

Kudos to the companies and organizations that mirror Mint

Greetings! One of the things I like to do periodically, when there are a few centavos left at the bottom of the jar, is to send you folks beer money. You work hard, and deserve everything we can send. By the same token, there are many excellent organizations that graciously mirror mint, some ...

Kudos to the Mint Team

Greetings! I decided, what with all the dust in the air, that it was time to post a thread that - if nothing else - says "Thank You" for all the effort that goes into making Mint the distribution it is. Buying you a cold brew when I can is important. However I also believe that standing up and telli...

For having the right distro immediately available for working I agree with you. LM is the best choice for me too.
I couldn't have said it better.

Kudos to everyone on the Mint team!
