SOLVED: Update failed - in fallback mode

I fired up my machine as per usual and Update Manager informed me there were updates. I duly elected to install them all. During the update, I got an error message that essentially said certain files cold not be found. On reboot, I get the message: "Cinnamon just crashed. You are currently runn...

Re: How to divide SSD for Win7 + LM dual boot?

It will also depend on the type of apps you install, and which version of windows 7x you use, as the higher cost versions start adding extra functions/features or apps, that you may or may not need So you have 5060GB for windows play --you could use a bit less for Linux if you like, such as 30GB or...

Re: Brother MFC-7340

I found this, but can't vouch for its effectiveness:

Plus, there is this thread, which worked for me, although mine isn't a MFC:

- about halfway down P3, look for Igortsky's posts.

Re: Need advice for new PC purchase...

I'm not a professional photographer but I looked into this a short while ago. It seems to me that the key to solving any problem of output not equalling screen display is one of calibration. A good friend of mine is a photographer and she uses a colorimeter to calibrate her screen, such as one of Da...

Re: [Solved] Update Error

HI all, many thanks for your help and suggestions - I'm grateful to you for taking the time to offer as much as you have. I've altered my thread title to "Solved" because I arrived at a workaround by using Synaptic PM. It also appears that the link to the forum page (Karl's advice) is a so...

Re: Update Error

Okay, I uninstalled RT, and tried to reinstall it, in Software Manager. I got the following error message: "The package could not be installed. Please chck your connection to the internet". I went to Synaptic Package Manager and it downloaded and installed RT without problem. Other applica...

Re: Update Error

why does it say " E: " like you were using windows instead of Linux? I don't know. My machine is dual boot and I think Windows wants to believe I have a drive E, but even so, it shouldn't be happening in Linux, I think. Also the deb package is an installation, not an update. You should re...

Re: Update Error

You could also go to that file before trying to install and rename it with a - at the end, see if the package loads with no problems then. Just tried your suggestion - which I thought was excellent and likely to be successful. No joy. Still the same error message. I guess I could just try uninstall...

I originally installed RT via Software Manager, and it is Update Manager that is attempting to, umm...update the files.

[Solved] Update Error

Hi all, I installed Raw Therapee some couple of months ago and Update Manager is giving me the following error message when it tries to update RT: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/rawtherapee_4.1-1dhor~trusty_amd64.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/rawtherapee/iccprofiles/output/RT_sRGB.icm', which is ...

Re: [SOLVED] Increasing Disk space Mint 17

The suggested fix worked superbly - I deided to reboot and check following each partition change, which slowed things a little, but I wanted to know where things fell over if that happened.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

I shall look into that first thing in the morning. I'm in Australia and it's night here.

Thanks for your help. And yes, my data will be backed up prior to trying anything.

[SOLVED] Increasing Disk space Mint 17

Hi all, I hope I'm in the right area. I'm relatively new to Mint but have dabbled with it for some time. For a couple of months, I've been working mostly in Mint, having made the switch. I have a dual-boot Asus N750JV with Win 8.1 the other OS. I need to run a Win program or two, so I have Win7 in a...

Re: How can I change from Cinnamon to Xfce?

My apologies to all. I think I've inadvertently caused confusion here: I read this thread as being for an existing install of Mint. Which I have - the Cinnamon flavour. What I'd like to do is try the other desktops, but following the instructions earlier inthis thread - namely to install mint-meta-x...

Re: How can I change from Cinnamon to Xfce?

I tried this, but found that XFCE only partially worked - I could swap the desktop but found I was missing any form of menu in the desktop, so to log out or otherwise leave, I had to power down my machine with the power button. I also tried the equivalent KDE install, but this failed to even show in...

Re: Bluetooth randomly fails

While BT is now operating a little more often on boot, it tends to fail without warning. I did a bit of hunting and checked a few things, like the config file in /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf, only to find the file wasn't there. I created it and slotted-in the line "options ath9k btcoex_enable=1&q...

Re: Bluetooth randomly fails

Tried a number of reboots and for the most part, BT is much better. Had one reboot where there was no BT on my machine but so far, BT is running at about 90% success versus perhaps 20% previously.

Re: Bluetooth randomly fails

I shall, but in a couple of days' time. (I really want to finish what I'm up to with my novel.) Then report back here on the results.

Thanks for all your help and patience and suggestions. I truly appreciate all you've done.

Cheers from chilly Australia!
