Re: Installation wipes whole drive

This time the drive is partitioned the same way. Installation will not let me install just on sda1 again. You're in "Something else" mode, which is correct, so click sda1 and then check "Format" and then hit "Change" to set that as the "/" partition; and in the lower left of the GUI the "Device for...

Re: fcheck process started

I think this means you don't need fcheck and can safely remove it

Code: Select all

$ fcheck
The program 'fcheck' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install fcheck
by doing

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge fcheck
Just keep an eye out for apt wanting to remove other stuff.

Re: How to keep live version from looking for things in cdrom://?

I can't do things like apt update or use the Driver Manager because I keep getting error messages that things at cdrom:// can't be found. Check the file below: $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list #deb cdrom:[Linux Mint 18.3 _Sylvia_ - Release amd64 20171129]/ xenial contrib main non-free If there's no "#" ...

Re: Wine problems

Wine installs just fine. I have an app that seems to install just fine, too, but when I try to execute the app, I get a message that there was a problem with Wine. The error details never display, so I really don't know what's going on. You get a message that there was a problem with a mysterious a...

Re: When correct password is entered login screen goes black and then asks for password again

You don't need a live USB for that, the defaults are stored in /etc/skel/ , just copy them over if you need to reset yours. I'd heard that, looked at that file and I don't think it'll do the trick - might depend on how he broke his system: $ grep PATH /etc/skel/.* grep: /etc/skel/.: Is a directory ...

Re: Stuck in 'boxed' guest account

Did a recent install of Mint 19 Cinnamon, which I removed the Switch User option in the logoff dialogue box (to save resources on my 2006 Dell). A far better solution is to NOT use resource-heavy Cinnamon (or KDE). Seems I blundered with a tip from EasyLinuxTipProject, com which I can't anymore (cla...

Re: When correct password is entered login screen goes black and then asks for password again

I'm still pretty new to linux so I'm not sure how to fix this. Lesson 1: don't mess with the PATH except to stick stuff at the end. Everybody does backups before they mess with important files and settings**, so boot the LiveDVD/USB and restore the files you messed with, probably ~/.profile and/or ...

Re: Begging for help on a copy and paste issue

I have noted that Nemo is the file editor of choice, nemo is actually a file browser. but don't know if it is responsible for my problem. As far as I can tell your problem has something to do with copy/paste text but can't tell what it is beyond that. In LibreOffice and (internet) browser, it's the...

Re: su-to-root not working

As far as I can tell, this acts like "gksudo" except you get a terminal instead of a text box to enter the password, so you can use it in menus and such. $ cat ~/bin/Gksudo #!/bin/sh # # Use this when gksu goes away. # xfce4-terminal --command="sudo -H -i -u root bash -c '$*' &" --geometry=45x10 Usa...

I guessed it!

Rather than dmesg, try

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze blame
and

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze critical-chain
You can probably

Code: Select all

systemctl disable ModemManager.service
systemctl disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service
The 2nd one literally "waits".

Re: Want to delete second Mint 18.3 system

In multiple disk systems, I frequently end up wondering where GRUB resides. One easy way to determine is to disconnect SDC and see if the system will boot. If it does, then no part of GRUB resides on SDC and you can wipe it and use it for whatever you like. If the system does not boot, then at leas...

Search synapttic for 4.13.0-45 and you'll find:

Code: Select all

linux-image-4.13.0-45-generic
Linux kernel image for version 4.13.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

Re: How to run FIREFOX without pulseaudio, by using "apulse"

Is there a way to easily undo these steps, eg. uninstalling Apulse after having it installed? The README.md file suggests making a ".deb" file (or some such), but this is easier: I just re-ran the "make install", it said: Install the project... -- Install configuration: "Release" -- Installing: /us...

Even though I have that checked, Grsync doesn't run rsync with the privileges needed. I just tried that (to backup the OS, which I normally do as root), and it didn't work...for me it might be because the command line it showed was pkexec rsync ...bunch of parameters... and pkexec doesn't work**. Re: Too fast uploading content on a flash drive

If the file is, for instance, 700 MB, uploading reaches 80% instantly and then hangs on this percentage forever. I had that too with thunar/Xfce. (Edit: except "not forever", it "hung" for as long as it took to copy the data). It's a bug, but it's a bug you can ignore if you feel like it. I "fixed ...
