Re: Installation and partitioning with a limited SSD

I want to install Mint on a laptop with a 128 GB SSD, 4 GB RAM, and an I5 2.53 Ghz 64 bit processor. The installation guide (at https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install.html) recommends 100+ GB for the OS and software. That leaves very little for home, swap, etc. What d...

and then, the same error:
That's to be expected since

Code: Select all

dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
was for diagnostics, and was not a fix.

What did

Code: Select all

dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
return?

Remove /etc/alternatives ... possible? [SOLVED - NO]

Edit, ANSWER: NOT POSSIBLE! Thanks! Is there a way to remove the /etc/alternatives setup without breaking everything? It's a bad idea and Manjaro (Arch) doesn't have it. $ which vi /usr/bin/vi $ ls -l /usr/bin/vi lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Nov 18 07:23 /usr/bin/vi -> /etc/alternatives/vi $ $ ls -l /e...

Nearly all website search engines require 4 characters or they won't search for a term.

Re: Installing Wine - can't enable 32-bit packages error

That error can be the result of a typo, e.g. you entered 'l386' rather than i386.
Try this -

Code: Select all

dpkg --print-foreign-architectures

Get yo your /home with cd ~ and sudo rm -r /media/usbdrive
Naturally check to make sure nothing is mounted to it :wink:
Would it be safer to

Code: Select all

rmdir /media/usbdrive
because that fails if the directory (mountpoint) isn't empty...?

Re: Can't get rid of 10 seconds Grub countdown

I will admit that's pretty True (in the Manowar, Warriors of True Metal sense, that is) but not sure I could stand getting intimate enough with the piece of shit to do so... Yeah, figuring out which 5% of the grub.cfg file was useful was the tricky part. FWIW, here's my ... # grub.cfg # default=0 #...

Another vote for (g)rsync. For one thing, if you have any problems (power goes out, whatever) it can keep track of what's already been copied.

Re: 19.1 slow to start

Is there something I can do to speed Mint up? Probably. I am a programmer and rebooting is something that can need to happen many times a day. {gasp!} :) Then you should know that you need to supply information about your problem; could you fix your software if someone said "it's too slow", with no...

Re: Can't get rid of 10 seconds Grub countdown

That ridiculous "hah, you may say you want a 0 second timeout but I know better!" nonsense was almost enough to cause me to immediately leave Mint again back when I was new. I edit grub.cfg by hand so as to avoid using grub software as much as possible. I think it's funny that "their" grub.cfg file...

You can't just lay that out there without an explanation that I hope it is up to the level I would expect from a Potemkin Villager sporting a Bob's head.
