Re: How to boost sound of Youtube video?

I have used avidemux, it has filters to increase the audio gain Even better, with avidemux you can extract the audio, edit it with audition/audacity, then insert the new audio into the video and save the new video losslessly. (Edit: keep the new audio file the same length as the input!) I suppose y...

Re: photoshop cs5

The only way I could get CS5 to work satisfactorily on my Linux PC was inside in a VMWare Windows 7 virtual machine. Same here, but with virtualbox (4.3.10 from repositories). You're wasting your time trying to use Photoshop in Wine. Long story short, Adobe and Linux don't mix. Photoshop 7 works we...

Re: XFCE - can't set Vim as default text editor

What happens if you type in terminal: $ xterm ? IOW, do you have xterm? IIRC, I had to install it. I don't have vim, but use vi all the time, and just tried opening a text file thru thunar; Open with -> other app -> "vi" made a vi process and created the .swp file, but no GUI! Open with -> other app...

Re: Removing leftover pieces of Mate in XFCE

"purge" (or "remove completely"), rather than just "remove", should remove the config files, except those under your home; for those, try (in term):
$ cd
$ find -iname "*ate*"
to find "mate" files to remove (note: you might get some non-mate files, look before deleting).

Didja run the commands as root/sudo?

See if this file exists: /var/cache/apt/archives/lock

If you're sure no other software is using the installer files - and some Mint stuff runs automagically - try deleting that file.

FWIW, my audacity settings look the same as yours except Recording: Front Mic:0 and Channels: 2 (Stereo) (I don't have an internal mic: selection show w/o mic plugged in, but that might matter: Is your mic plugged in ?) Does "Front (or Rear) mic" not show up in your device list in audacity? Have you...

Re: Can't get sound input to be output to speakers.

I don't think this is actually a problem - just my ignorance of Linux at this point. No, it is a problem because linux audio is a mess and something this simple - select an audio source to hear in the speakers - should be completely obvious without any confusion or subtleties. when I check the inpu...

Re: Backup Strategies

Would like input on strategies for backup. Backup OS or data? For data I use grsync (rsync w/GUI) to backup data to a different internal partition, and to two partitions (ext4 and ntfs) on a USB drive, pretty regularly. For OS I just cp -ax (as root) everything from "/" to another (empty) partition...

Re: Guitar Rig 5 on Wine vs. PlayOnLinux

It seems I can easily fix it by deleting the contents of ~./pulse then restarting, but eventually I'll figure out why it's breaking. You might consider running w/o pulse. When I was trying to get Jack to work I saw many suggestions about doing that (along with "Yes, you can use Jack and Pulse toget...

I don't know how to run VLC from the terminal in

In a terminal:
$ vlc [optional_filename]

Then tools->codec information to see what your file has.

FWIW, .mov files from my Canon Powershot sx50 play fine in LM17 with no fiddling.
You probably need some stupid library....

Re: I can't find a folder I transferred

I wanted Blade_Runner.mp4 but the file naming wouldn't allow the underscore... so it had a space like so Blade Runner.mp4 An underscore is a perfectly good character, and there shouldn't have been a problem with doing that ...unless you already had a file of that name (with the '_'). You're right, ...

Re: How to set folder in which screenshots are saved

Find out which program cinnamon uses for screen shots, try
$ program_name -h

and see if it has a parameter you can set: for xfce4-screenshooter:
-s, --save Directory where the screenshot will be saved

Then modify the keyboard shortcut.

Re: Looking for Standard C include files

You're right, and that's messed-up. http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/cmath/sqrt/ saith: "Header <tgmath.h> provides a type-generic macro version of this (sqrt) function." There is a sqrt mentioned in tgmath.h, but I get program.c:(.text+0x50): undefined reference to `sqrt' with both math.h and tgm...
