Re: Why is Mint (and desktop Linux in general) so cumbersome

- Keyboard and (especially) mouse lag when the system is under 100% CPU load I've never had that happen. - The cursor doesn't really reflect what's actually going on. I've never had that happen. - Some part of the desktop stack crashes once every few weeks, sending me back to the login screen - I'v...

ffmpeg oravconv Should be: ffmpeg OR avconv Those have pretty funky parameters. OR these packages/programs: - soundconverter - audacity - lame Some of them are around 100mb and I want to shrink them down to say 50mb without removing any content. Cut the encoding bitrate in half. Or cut the bit dept...

using fluxbox as WM and MDM as DM W/fluxbox and NO display/session-manager, I logout (thru fluxbox menu) and X stops. "startx" and it's going again. To do that, make this ludicrous change to /etc/init/tty1.conf : # for automatic login w/o a session manager: exec /bin/login -f lemur tty1 </dev/tty1 ...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

So is that suggesting not installed? Yes, not installed. The files are there. You have some profile files, they're not part of the installation. What do you mean by installed? Same as with any other program: that there's a "palemoon" executable to execute. To me (probably wrongly?) that would invol...

Re: Not able to boot, stopped in Booting the kernel, Help pl

Then I went to the second boot option: "recovery mode" and it booted after some warnings that I could not read, too fast. Just booting to "recovery mode" - should be called "single" mode, which is the boot parameter - doesn't do anything except let you login to a basic/non-GUI environment. Boot int...

Re: System takes 4 minutes to get to the booting stage?!?

Standard installation replacing a broken old LMDE install, /home on a separate partition is the only tweak, just used the /home from the old install and added it in the fstab.
Unless you erased or reformatted the /home partition, using data from a "broken install" is probably a bad idea.

Re: Multiple versions of LM17.1 on the same disk

1 - would I need a Swap Area for each flavour, or one Swap Area for all versions? One swap partition will work. 2 - My intended partition structure otherwise would be / and /home. Why a separate /home ? Why "otherwise" ? 3 - Would there be any conflict of having more that one LM distro on the same d...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

which "pale moon" Isn't the executable named "palemoon", without blanks? Earlier you'd written: palemoon (Enter) 'palemoon: command not found'. $ which firefox /usr/bin/firefox $ which fffirefox $ If you get nothing from the "which" command, it's not installed or not in your $PATH. Try which palemo...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

ln -s /mnt/DATA/moonchild productions /home/gam/.moonchild productions(Enter) Blanks in filenames. That's evil. No error messages? When I type it I get ln: target ‘productions’ is not a directory (I have a /mnt/DATA directory, too). Put quotes around both part because of the pesky blanks: ln -s "/m...

Re: Accidentally Messed Up Fonts

You should run fc-cache after manually adding font files to /usr/share/fonts Try sudo fc-cache -fv That should make the font cache consistent with the font files. If you're missing fonts or it's still hosed, start synaptic and search for 'font' and 'ttf' and reinstall them. Or similar with dpkg and/...

Ive tried out some of what you have suggested and it works great Good! Was it "-s" param? The link about the scripts is a bit too complicated for where I am right now, but I will keep it in mind as I continue learning linux. Scripts can be pretty esoteric(!) - if you try bulk renaming (or bulk anyt...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

I want to install the same program on Xfce. This program is not yet installed. My thinking is that when I download and install it it will come with its own set of files (Profiles.ini, etc). Those (~/.mozilla) get created when the program is first run - if they don't already exist. If they already e...

For those and similar settings, try Xfce Panel -> Menu -> Settings -> Settings Manager. With Linux will I be required to become a programmer again and make changes only by the command line? No. Most normal stuff has a GUI, like windows, as above. However it is worth it to become familiar with the te...

The platforms I've done some limited scripting work on have been more "UNIX" than "Linux".
Yeah, IIRC, in Unix "." was usually in your PATH by default; if you like that setup you can add "." to the PATH in your ~/.bashrc_profile

Re: How to erase a disk in Linux mint 13.1 maya

You could just re-install over the top of the existing Mint partition.
Safest to format it first. Choose "Something Else" install option and check "Format" when you select the partition for "/".

Re: Errors after login

For sound problem, try deleting ~/.pulse* and/or restarting pulseaudio (google it!).

For the other login problem, say to fix Mate, get a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2...), login as root, then

dpkg -l *mate*

to get a list of mate things, then

dpkg-reconfigure the-things-on-that-mate-list
