Re: Can't empty rubbish bin.

I had temporarily put windows on to fix problems with my Ipod using Itunes which is when I deleted the music folder which I assume is why it is called $RECYCLEBIN but it definitely contains the 46GB of music. Then it's the windows "trash"/recycle-bin, which is completely different from linux trash....

Re: Firefox desktop icon & menu button locked to /root autho

Try this:
$ cd
$ chown -R your-username .*
$ chown -R your-username *

If it complains about some files, "sudo chown" them.

Re: How can I add an option to the Terminal command string?

Do you really want an xterm rather than some other terminal ?

Most or all of the others will have a size setting, (e.g. xfce4-terminal -> Prefs -> Appearance -> Default Geom (rows, cols)) that sticks.

Re: How to remove Wine?

Thanks to linux's terrible implementation of mime, it's ALL OVER THE PLACE, and you're sill missing some wine stuff, e.g.: ~/.local/share/mime/packages/x-wine-extension* ~/.local/share/mime/application/x-wine-extension* ~/.cache/winetricks and probably others. To get it all, $ cd $ find -iname "*win...

Re: how do you delete s/ware

My introduction on how to install software on Linux Mint may help further your understanding about this: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=97158 One thing missing there is removing the config file(s) under /home/username ; sometimes those cause problems when people are re-installing or reconfiguring packages to...

Re: My Mint Is Hanging :/

So firstly, can you please help me diagnose the problem? Try $ dmesg If you want to see message from a previous boot, look in /var/log/dmesg.* for older ones. Also, in a terminal, try: $ cd $ find -iname "*freq*" to see if there are some indicator-cpufreq config files laying around that don't get r...

Re: Quickly switch audio output from speakers to headphones?

and vice versa? Is there a way to switch back and forth besides unplugging my headphones? Look into "amixer"; for example, I have (un)mute set to toggle from a keypress. I think this would work for you after you have it set so only one is on, and the other off: Exec amixer sset Surround,0 toggle $ ...

Re: No sound in Linux Mint 17.1

I installed PulseAudio, without any result. Was it installed before? If not, pulseaudio will likely just contribute to problems. Could change the kernel to an older version solve my problem? Probably not. But, what are your previous and current kernels? First run alsamixer and make sure everything ...

Re: Best partitioning / usage for 2 large drives

* Would you install a second distro - if so which one and why. Yes. It's quite handy to have two or more linuxes if, like me, you like to break things. * Would you 'expand' /home to include parts of the first drive - how? No. Since /home contains system data files, it shouldn't include non-system d...

I think the PPAs in the OP are from here:

which, IIRC, I used for quite a while without problems.

I think it's a matter of poor design: "mousepad" and "gimp" and others also don't allow pasting a path or filename.
Edit: nor does firefox (!)

Re: help to install irfanview launcher

The instructions I had for the launcher I got from a Linux website (Sven Boekhoff) on how to install IrfanView on Linux so it might have appeared as though I was more knowledgeable than I really am. OK. It looked OK (except for the space in "Program Files" !) but I don't use them, so not an expert....

Re: Mint 17 hangs when using FireFox.

Not a cure, but you could "Ctrl+Alt+F1" (or F2,3...), get a console and "killall firefox".
Also try "mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.save" to completely reset the FF settings.

Re: Wine won't install in Debian Betsy

Indeed, it works fine with the terminal - but any 'newbie' coming from an ubuntu distro (like me) is used to getting a "Wine" folder created in the Start Menu applications + the ability to right-ciick on a .exe file and select 'start with Wine'. So the problem is lack of 'wine' menus, not the rest ...
