Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

Hi Brian, your self criticism with Speed Dial gone over the top i can confirm. I prefer old school bookmarks :D For those who like to play with pictures it might be ok. But for a simple rescue cd with the aim to offer qt4-fsarchiver in a better way than we know from the Ubuntu CDs, i think it's too...

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

I might have gone over the top with the Firefox/Iceweasel profile but for me Josep Del Rio's Speed Dial was a game changer. I've got an NTFS data partition with a symbolic link in my home folder where I keep my FX profile. With this set up I use the same profile on any/all OS's installed on my machi...

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

I put this SalineOS based rescue iso together http:/lin.me.uk/qt4-fsarchiver/qt4-fsarchiver-12-01-22.iso this link is behaving oddly but the URL works It's got Firefox on it with a profile that includes a basic custom Speed Dial menu that would be easily personalized and moved to a users ...

Re: Comparison: XFCE vs MATE (Gnome 2)

I started using xfce custom menus about 6 months ago and now it's the first thing I do on a fresh install. I have trouble describing things so here's a video 178 MB http://lin.me.uk/temp/saline-menu-Project-01.mp4.tar.gz This is a link to the menu being used in the video http://lin.me.uk/temp/saline...

Re: How to mount/find a nfts partition?

You might find it worth while to try Gigolo it should be in synaptic and there's a video walkthro at http://www.youtube.com/ukbrian I think it's the third one down, that's what i use when I only want to occassionally mount a drive. I have my home in the root partition but I have a symbolic link/fold...

Re: Backuping my LMDE

You are right Brian, i forgot about the UUID/Label thing  Very occasional I am but not that often, I'm normally out of my depth and struggling to learn to swim. I don't know how dangerous it is to have 2 identical UUID's on a machine and I'd like someone more knowledgeable to state the danger...

Re: Backuping my LMDE

I use qt4-fsarchiver in order to backup my LMDE - http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=197&t=89189 - It is possible to restore an fsa clone to any partition of your choice on your system or usb. To the best of my knowledge be aware that if you clone or install a backup on the same machin...

Re: An LMDE and AV Linux cross-breed....?

set the Debian repositories to 'Squeeze' I run AV Linux myself to use Openshot and Audacity. I run SalineOS based on Squeeze for my everyday OS. http://www.salineos.com/ With Squeeze you only have access to old versions of Openshot in the Squeeze repos. AV Linux gives you much later versions and I ...

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

No, i did not say that. Your qt4-fsa restore cd works :D Thank you, i'm a bit thick sometimes, maybe a lot thick. :D But until now the people who have one system installed and don't have your cd, need a Live CD such as the Ubuntu Maverick v. we where talking about. And it is in german. Viking descr...

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

On Parted Magic i found english, italian, spanish, french, japanes, chinese, german. I think it's a good choice. German is With the wireless drivers, if FF is on the cd, wd drivers are needed i think. are "wd drivers" wireless drivers? As long as we don't have an 'own' Live CD available, ...

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

I've started on the restore CD, I've made it as small as I can so now it's time to add features to it. I've got a language option that I think will be OK but what languages to include? I don't think you need us and uk for instance What languages please, less is best because of the size limits of the...

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

Lean and Mean is the way, this is the base install, you can always bloat it after but it's only job is to restore fsarchivers backups. edit I've been messing with another rescue iso and it's around 670 MB with firefox installed but I haven't played with the firefox profile yet. down to 638 MB now :D...

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

If I get rid of Firefox it will fit easily on a cd but this is my first try i think i can improve a lot. another hour to go uploading :D I think it's good to show folk how to do it for those that want to learn. Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

Question
Does it matter what Linux/Debian flavor the rescue media runs under as long as it's easy to use?

I've been shrinking a Squeeze based XFCE distro down by reducing apps etc.
I've got it down to 702 MB if it's of any interest i'll post a link after it's uploaded.

Re: Backup/Restore Partitions with qt4-fsarchiver HowTo

Brian, you know much more about backup/backuptools than me :) About three years ago i left Windows, which i never backed up, behind me. I was too stupid for it. Then started with Ubuntu, Mint Gloria, Helena. I never backed up them and never broke them except ubu in the first weeks. Install, break, ...
