Re: Brightness keys on Macbook Air
Can you please clarify what version of Mint you are using & can you go to a terminal and type inxi and paste the results here...This way it will be much easier to help. Right now the background info is missing.

Re: Firefox stalling & crash
Can you also post your system output here. Can you pen a terminal, type inxi and paste the output here?
It seems like your software versions are very old. 4.4.0.21 is a very old Kernel version. Hope this doesn't sound silly but is your system fully up to date?

Great, agree its a bit confusing that all drivers are in the zip file. Just extract both tar files and see which one works

Re: Every time Firefox updates, the default search engine reverts to Yahoo. I want to stick with Google
Maybe also to add, it is important to also change the default search engine in the "preferences tab". Only choosing the search engine through the magnifying glass will result in Firefox reverting to the default after reboot.

Re: Uninstallable KDE?
In your case its a missing ppa because it is referring to a package not available in the current repositories. It's not a rule of thumb to not run multiple DEs at the same time. I have done it before without major issues. I just don't do it probably for psychological reasons of wanting a clean parti...

Re: Mint 17.3 Cinnamon screen glitching and crashing
Am I seeing correctly that you have a Skylake machine? Even Kernel 4.4 is not right for that CPU. You should give 18.2 Beta a try as it is pretty final and stable. I wouldn't bother at all with 17.3. Also as mentioned I would only install the recommended HW Kernels. So I would install 18.2 and then ...

Re: Wifi driver disappeared after installation
So if you follow these exact steps, does it not work? The Macbook Pro uses a Broadcom wireless chipset. To connect to the Internet, we need to install its driver. From the menu, run Administration -> Driver Manager The Driver Manager warns that it cannot install drivers... (because we're offline) Pl...

Alternatively, I think it even works without the driver manager or is easier. Just browse to the mentioned firmware file and click on it to install it with the package manager. Holding thumbs

Re: Wifi driver disappeared after installation
There should be an easy fix to this and I had a similar problem when I loaded Ubuntu on a Macbook. This is provided Wifi was working during installation... 1. Check the actual network module. Go to terminal and type lspci 2. Now when you in driver manager Browse to the Mint installation CD/USB etc. ...

Re: Frame drops on Intel Haswell + cinnamon
Hi there
as a started. Have you tried a newer Kernel like the Ubuntu 4.8 version. It should be available on the update manager. There shouldnt be a problem with Linux44 and 4th generation CPU but worth a try

As stated above. I would also recommend XFCE. Cinnamon is indeed on the heavier side, especially on an older i3. There are a few really great XFCE-based distros

Re: VLC causing Mint18 to freeze
Can you try update the Kernel through the normal process ie not UKUU. This way you get the LTS approved versions. I am playing around with MInt 18.2 which installs with 4.8 by default. I then switched to 4.10 which is the version Ubuntu 17.04 ships. In 18.2 the steps are: Preferences - Update Manage...

Can you open the terminal, type "inxi" and post the output here. Also, it would be helpful to others to show the same for "journalctl -b"

Re: VLC causing Mint18 to freeze
I have a pretty good idea what's going on. You are running a very recent machine on Linux44. This Kernel doesn't support Skylake and later processors very well and I used to have similar problems. I wouldn't use anything lower than 4.9 on my laptop. Can you install 4.10 from the update tool and repo...
