Re: Linux Mint 16 Review
I don't know, I was running a live session of Mint 16 Cinnamon yesterday and thought it looked quite nice, very attractive. Whatever. Nice review, by the way -- thanks for the link.

Re: What leads to distro preferences?
I like following different projects so I multi-boot and don't really have a "preferred distro." Debian Stable for my main computer -- I know I can always depend on it. But I also enjoy using Arch, Sabayon, Ubuntu... typing this from openSUSE. Everybody's different. Generally, I like a dist...

Re: How does Arch compare to other GNU/Linux distros?
I didn't want to take the time to do an Arch installation, so I cheated and went with Bridge Linux (Xfce spin) and ArchBang (comes with Openbox) instead. Both of those basically give you an Arch system, but are much quicker and easier to install than Arch. Very nice experience so far, but I'd like t...

Re: 4th most widely used operating system in the world?
Anyway, I believe the OP to be correct: Linux Mint is in no way the fourth most popular operating system in the world. dee. makes a good point: Technically, there's no such OS as "Linux", there are OS's that are based on the Linux kernel. However, Linux (or "GNU/Linux") IS common...

Re: 4th most widely used operating system in the world?
I'd say that, as well, Ubuntu and Linux Mint are different versions of the same OS (Linux).tdockery97 wrote:First of all, Vista/7/8/XP are all different versions of the same OS: Windows. So if you want to count the top 4 operating systems they are 1) Windows, 2) OSX, 3) Ubuntu, and 4) Linux Mint.

Re: Linux veteran, should I use Mint?
I have been considering Debian stable because of its long and undisputed reputation for being the most reliable, but don't know how much fiddling will be required to get it configured and going. Do I understand correctly that: Debian Stable is the most stable, but will require more work to get it g...

Re: Saucy Salamander is a fiasco: The worst Ubuntu release e
craig10x, it amazes me, too. Sometimes I don't know which amazes me more: the people who spend so much time criticizing Ubuntu even though they don't even use it , or the people who use spend so much time criticizing Ubuntu while they use the Ubuntu-based Linux Mint ! In any case, nobody's forcing a...

Re: What if Linux Mint moved away from Ubuntu?
Folks might want to check out this interview with Clem: http://www.techworld.com.au/article/529572/q_clement_lefebvre_man_behind_linux_mint/ Looks like he isn't planning on moving away from Ubuntu, but he's keeping his options open. As the man himself said: Why Ubuntu? Because it was (and still is) ...

Re: Saucy Salamander is a fiasco: The worst Ubuntu release e
I know PCLinuxOs is nice...but they are more kde oriented and i am a gnome kind of guy... On their site they have all different flavors. KDE is their main one but they also have Gnome, Mate, Xfce, LXDE, E17, and Cinnamon coming soon (in their forums you find the other flavors, some unofficia...

Re: Saucy Salamander is a fiasco: The worst Ubuntu release e
craig10x, correct me if I'm wrong but what you're describing (Ubuntu development branch) sounds somewhat along the lines of Debian Sid and/or Testing, which are kinda rolling-release, too. Of course, that's a different kind of rolling-release than something like Arch or Sabayon. Different goals and ...

Re: Saucy Salamander is a fiasco: The worst Ubuntu release e
craig10x, that sounds like a good approach. I'll stick with LTS releases for Ubuntu, though. I've never really had any interest in those in-between releases, partly because I run several distros here, including rolling-release distros like Sabayon, ArchBang, Chakra, etc. For long-term and stable, I ...

Re: Saucy Salamander is a fiasco: The worst Ubuntu release e
Haven't tried Ubuntu 13.10 myself; I prefer to stick with LTS releases. But, seeing a thread title like this one at the Mint forums, I'm inclined to want to take it with a grain of salt.... 8) So far, I've looked over four different reviews of Ubuntu 13.10, but none of those reviewers come anywhere ...

Re: How can I make Linux work for me?
Also, this might not be helpful, but just to give you some encouragement, I've been using Linux for several years, and on quite a few different computers, and I don't recall ever having the mouse/keyboard problems you're having. Works in the live sessions, works post-installation. So I think you'll ...

Re: How can I make Linux work for me?
Two things you can try: 1. Start a thread for a specific issue -- for example, one for the keyboard and mouse not being recognized -- and see if anyone will reply with some tips. 2. Take advantage of web searches. I did one using these search terms, and got a bunch of hits that look worth checking o...

Awesome!
Exercises like that are great ways for learning how to use the terminal. You're totally on the right track! Good luck!
Don't mention it -- something like this, that's my idea of fun!Kath27 wrote:I appreciate all your help and patience.

Re: How to Verify md5sum in Linux w/ Terminal
Yep, you have only the checksum and the name of the .iso, but not the command itself. My example looked like this: steve[~/Downloads]$ echo "a2b1a962a7d8df4aab68c22618d7cb2c gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso" | md5sum -c - gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso: OK The first command there is echo ,...

Re: How Do You Remove Old Kernel
In any Debian-based distro (including Ubuntu, Mint, etc.), I like to use Synaptic for this. I go to Synaptic and do a search using the search term linux-image , then right-click on the old kernel (the name will start with "linux-image...") and click on "Mark for Complete Removal."...

MALsPa: Do I then need to download GParted live for your method to work? If so, is the version in the Software Manager sufficient? No, I just used the GParted Live .iso as an example, but it can be any .iso. GParted from the repos doesn't give you the GParted Live .iso; that's for the Gparted packa...
