Re: LMDE5 - will Mate (or xfce) make it any snappier?

I've replaced cinnamon with xfce on a thinkpad l430 3rd gen i5, 8gb, ssd. Can't really see a difference in "snappiness" but I love xfce. Your hardware sounds more "vintage" than mine, so you may well see a difference--or you may hose the system altogether. If it's working now, an...

That site is the work of Pjotr, a member here. I've been using his tips as long as I've been using Mint. An excellent resource, you can't go wrong!

Re: Which Mint version did you start with?

I played with linux as a diversion back in the 90's--Redhat (no DE), then went to Simply Mepis, eventually Ubuntu, and Mint. I started using Mint as my daily driver at Mint 13.0 XFCE, and have used Mint 15, 16,17, 18, 19, and 20, also MX-21 XFCE which would be my second choice to Mint.

Re: Clonezilla's oddities

Menard, What your post is telling me is that your chosen repository contains only disk images and you have told clonezilla that you want to restore a partition image. Nothing wrong with that, you just need to go ahead and choose the partition from the image file available. This is true, even if the ...

My experience has been the opposite, i.e. Brave is faster than Firefox; but I keep all the rewards crap turned off, and I only run three extensions.

Re: Easy backup of files and programs

Another vote for Clonezilla, or any reliable imaging software! I have been doing this since windows 95 and Ghost by Binary Research. (Ghost then fit on a floppy with room to spare!) I always keep my data on a separate partition, with Home and root on the same partition. I backup the boot partition w...

Re: [solved] update to update manager clunky

As Cosmo pointed out, anything on your blacklist possibly (probably) got updated while automatic updates was turned on! In my case, blacklisted packages got updated and they were blacklisted for good reason. I spent part of this morning restoring clonezilla images and re-updating 7 systems (our whol...

Re: update to update manager clunky

This happens now and again. Not often, but often enough to be annoying. Makes me want to turn off mintupdate, or at least set it to weekly or even monthly. Maybe avoid multiple downloads of the same application.

Re: LM4 and Brave

Yes! I ran Brave on my LMDE4 install without a hitch. I've since upgraded that install via the new update tool, to LMDE5. Brave went along for the ride, and is still running happily!

Cday:
Yes, if you pushed that delete downloaded files button, it should have cleared everything out of apt cache except the file "lock" and the directory "partial".
Best way to see for yourself is to open the directory I mentioned in my previous post.

Re: Mint Cinnamon installed size

Cday: On my system(s) mint 20.3 xfce, I have found that even though I have checked the "delete downloaded.....", update packages are still stored in the apt cache. It is necessary to open Synaptic, preferences, files, and hit the button to actually delete the update packages. To see this, ...

Re: Mint 21 and forward

On 20.3 xfce, some windows are not resizeable. In order to use on a lo-res (1366x768) screen, it is necessary to alt-click-drag, sometimes multiple times. For example some of the "sub-dialogs" e.g. "preferences/blacklist" in update manager won't fit the screen and although hoveri...

Re: Problem after samba update

All joking aside, did the samba update cause the bug in gvfs, because the current implementation of gvfs works fine with the "pre-update" version of samba.

Re: todays samba update

Thank for your response altair4. I have seen that popup in the past, and have always elected to keep my config file. I did not get the popup this time. At first, after updating 5 computers, one (a thinkpad l430) refused to connect to any samba share (even after a reboot). Another , a t530, refused t...

todays samba update

I'm on Mint 20.3 xfce, and Samba was working too well (perfectly) up until I updated 6 computers on our home network. After the update the samba connectivity was crippled/totally broken. Had to revert 5 machines back to my last backup image, and then blacklist the latest samba update. One day I'll l...

Re: Boot to HD Linux with USB Drive in Place?

If you do want to boot to an external (bootable) drive in the future, you should be able to just hit F12 and select it, without having to change the boot order back. Bob Depends on the mfr, on one of my Linux boxes it is F12, on another it's F2, on my daily dfriver it's F9. Easy enough to find out ...
