Re: Dual-boot, VM or else…

Basically, I am a Windows user considering switching over to Linux Mint. Now, because my HP laptop is very stubborn with its RST, not letting me install Mint. QUESTION: What are the advantages and disadvantages of each and which one would you choose? I personally would go with #2. If you share your...

Re: Old Laptops

Our state government surplus store removes and destroys hard drives from old laptops, then sells them for $20 US. These are corporate grade machines, 3 to 5 years old, very sturdy with good specs. Quite a deal given the low cost of SSD's these days. For example I bought a Dell Latitude 6440 last ye...

Re: A New User

@JRay, I prefer to run Windows in a Virtual Machine Some people prefer to run M/S Windows and Linux on the same machine using dual-boot methodology. I prefer to use a virtual machine approach so I can have both Linux and M/S Windows installed and running (or available) at any time without having re-...

Re: Best .wma File Conversion Tool?

I have some songs that are .wma files that I am unable to listen to on my phone. What's the best Linux Mint tool to use to convert them to a file format such as .mp3 so that I can listen to them on my phone? I've seen references to VLC as well as FFmpeg. Which is preferred? Are there others? My pla...

You might want to take a look at LibreOffice. It is in the Software Manager. Very similar to OO and better support IMHO.

Do you feel confident that the laser will cost less to operate? Just curious, as I might think about this move down the road. I assume it is b/w only?

Re: Been looking for a laptop

@John2003cpht,

Once you find the system you want, you may want to look it up on eBay. You can save $$ if you find one refurbished. The 'Certified Excellent' gave me a very clean system (Dell) with a one year return guarantee. Check the seller performance record!

Good luck :idea:

@bobmct, This may not be what you are looking for but as a shortcut, in the file manager, if I high-light an ODT file and press the space bar, LO with quickly open the file in view (read) mode.

Re: Linux Mint won't recognize iPhone to port in photos (have all libimobiledevice packages installed)

@wihi, A temp work around would be to use a cloud service, such as your iCloud or a free one called pCloud. Then you could download to Mint. I have used pCloud in the past. You can have the phone automatically sync your pix with pCloud and then d/l later. It also gives a backup of your pix. (pcloud....
