Re: Asus G75VX drivers...

Which wireless card do you have? You can find info like that using the inxi command. Specifically, inxi -N If it's a broadcom, you can use ndiswrapper to install the wireless drivers. The other ones should work without issue. I believe for the sound, you'll have to tweak pulseaudio or just live with...

Re: Cinnamon is almost there.

I have used that window list applet in the past with excellent results. I think the biggest reason for lack of goodies is because Mint is pretty much the only distro to ship with cinnamon. I don't know of any other major distros that do that. If something like Debian (yeah right) or even Fedora ship...

If you don't want the configuration files for those packages either, you can purge instead of remove.

Re: Linux Mint 14 KDE Freezing bug

I don't have any problems with KDE on my Intel CORE i3 machine. Does anyone else have issues with KDE on nVidia cards? That's the only common denominator I can see.

Re: Linux Mint E17

Why not put LXDE and XFCE on one release as they are both small desktos. This way we could have the best of both. How about haveing Cinamon and Mate on one. I know that cinnamon still uses gnome for some of its parts. So why not make cinnamon use mate instead of Gnome. I also thik KDE and Trinity c...

Re: Can sofware damage your hardware?

The only way I can think of that an OS could damage your hardware is intentional overheating by turning off fans or excessive I/O operations. It is within the realm of possibility that Linux could be expediting the death of your hardware, but it is neither intentional nor the root cause of failure. ...

Re: Mount errors after power outage

I've done that more times than I care to mention. Try running fsck and see where that gets you. You might have to reinstall, but you should be able to recover most of your data.

Re: Desktop Netflix

I don't think that actually switched drivers. I think it just loaded the 32-bit graphics libraries. I had to do the same thing to get some games working.

So the application appearance settings do not work? Also the Window decorations settings?

Here is the the thread you're looking for. I'd say if it ran XP smoothly, you should be fine. You might not be able to enable any or all of the eyecandy though.

Re: am I connected via ethernet or wireless?

Which DE are you on? MATE or Cinnamon? In KDE, if you click on the network icon in the taskbar, then click on the network name, it will show you the connection information. Including the graph of data transmitted/received. I'm not sure if this works in the other DE's or not. Another option is to tur...

Re: difference between the lm firefox and regualr one?

I think the only real difference is the branding and some of the defaults. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I usually use opera.

Re: Does a Cinnamon + KDE install use more ram than ea. alon

You can use the command line utility 'top' to view running processes. The KDE file indexing service has caused problems for me in the past. The KDE utility KSysGuard also works well. Just look in the process table.

Re: How do I make a dd clone bootable?

You could, but there are better options than DD. I see clonezilla recommended a lot. If you have a windows install disc I believe you could run Microsoft's backup from it. It's been a while since I've had to use one though, so I'm not entirely sure. Expect to reinstall the bootloader no matter what ...

Re: Dual Boot Ubuntu and Olivia

Your best bet to determine where the system is installed is to check the output of inxi.

Code: Select all

inxi -l
You can use this in either linux install.

Is there an update available? You can check by opening a terminal and running sudo apt-get update That command will ask you for your password. It will check for updates for you. If that has problems getting packages post the exact error message back here. If the software center doesn't have any upda...

Re: Does a Cinnamon + KDE install use more ram than ea. alon

Hal8000 has it right, unless Gnome (Cinnamon) or KDE has any background services running at startup. AFAIK, there are not any installed by default. When you open a Gnome application in KDE it will have to load Gnome libraries that were not normally open. The opposite is also true.

I hate to say it, but copied movies almost never have this problem. CSS is a security measure to prevent the copying of the movie.
