Re: Greek characters

Since they are Unicode characters, you could learn the keycodes. Or you can use a character map thing like windows has. I'm not sure if one is installed by default.

Re: DVD Drive problem after running Mint from disc

I apologize for any confusion. I thought the OP was referring to the spindle in a drawer type drive not accepting a disk. I have seen that happen on occasion. Again, I apologize for my mistake. Stuck disks in slot loaders sometimes require disassembly of the drive. Not a task for the inexperienced D...

Re: DVD Drive problem after running Mint from disc

EDITED. It seems that I was viewing the wrong model in my Google image search. I redact my statement and apologize for any confusion or hardship I may have caused. I must also add that a slot loading drive as is in this laptop will be significantly more difficult to replace than a traditional drawer...

Re: Does a Cinnamon + KDE install use more ram than ea. alon

If you're running all the Gnome + KDE background services, I can easily see 1GB of RAM usage.
Also, you should see less than 90% RAM usage when you start using swap.

Re: Mobility Radeon HD 54xx drivers not functioning properly

I agree with MDM about laptops being undercooled. Do you perchance have a HP/COMPAQ? My old HP with a Phenom II x3 and a HD5650M made a wonderful coffee warmer. I bought an ASUS with an i3 and now My CPU never exceeds 65°C. I replaced the terrible stock thermal paste with AS5 and that number dropped...

Re: .jar file default program?

I think you can add another option to that list. I could be mistaken though.

And to launch minecraft, I just made a menu entry with the correct command.

Code: Select all

java -jar ~/.minecraft/minecraft.jar
(I think that's correct. It's been a while.)

Re: Old Linux games, do they work

I do believe that a few of the free FPS games available in the repositories use the same engine as UT (UT3 is different than UT:GOTY or UT '99)
If you have a modern system, TF2 is a good FPS and is free to play.

Re: HOW TO RESTORE DEFAULT SETTINGS OF LINUX MINT 13

FIRSTLY: CAPS LOCK DOES NOT HELP. PLEASE TURN IT OFF. Second, you need to uninstall WICD. Then make sure network-manager is installed. This should work unless your terminal commands broke your system further. If you really messed up your install, it might be easiest to back up your data and reinstal...

Re: DVD Drive problem after running Mint from disc

It does sound like a dead drive. Especially if it won't accept disks. When you install Mint, it is much faster to install with a Live USB than a DVD. You can then also hold off on buying the drive.

Re: Total Newbie asks - MATE or Cinnamon

I agree with the above post. Try both and install whichever you prefer. If you could run Vista smoothly, you should be able to run Cinnamon without any issues.

Re: Does a Cinnamon + KDE install use more ram than ea. alon

I did not notice any increase in RAM usage when I installed KDE on my Mint 13 Cinnamon system. YMMV.
I also ran 4 different DE's on a less powerful system than yours a few years ago. It was fine until I started loading tons of applications.

Re: DVD playback stuttering

I had the same issues with some older DVDs as well. I believe it has to do with the CSS. Does it play fine on a Windows system if one is available?
I usually find alternate means of obtaining the video when this happens.

Re: Switching DEs

The only thing you'll be out for trying LXDE or any other DE is your time and bandwidth. I say go for it. I haven't had any slowness with Chrome as long as I dont have a huge number of tabs open. Firefox is occasionally slow on my system. Opera is good too.

[ But regardless of upgrading, given what you said, it sounds like your 10 years worth of files on your hard drive are your only copy. If true, you'd be doing yourself a huge favor by backing them up to an external device/media. Every hard drive will eventually fail, typically without warning. Joe ...

Re: Full Disk Encryption and Prey

I think you will want to install mint twice and encrypt one install. create an extra ext4 partition, but don't use it in the first install. then install mint there after you finish the first install.

In order:
No. Do that during the mint install.
No, use the software in the first link.
You have to search Google for something like "md5 sum Windows 8"
Read through the second link.

There are plenty of sites. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal Honestly though, the best place to learn about it is from within it. The man and apropos commands are lifesavers. The most common commands you'll use are: sudo, cd, ls, cp, mv, rm, man, apt-get sudo gives root privileges f...

Re: I am always a newby

You don't have Caja installed. Try another file manager off of the list.

Or you can learn to use the command line to browse directories. I find it faster than the GUI anyway. especially with the TAB autocomplete function.

Re: Switching DEs

If you don't want the entire xubuntu install, just install XFCE and the applications you want. The xubuntu-desktop package includes most of the xubuntu install. You also don't need to add any repositories. The mint-meta-xfce package should include almost everything needed for a true Mint XFCE instal...
