I heard stories from others here that, sometimes the "unmount" operation can linger for a long time. The icon on desktop may disappear immediately but the write cache haven't finished their job. This is why it's a good idea to have USB sticks with LEDs in them. They all should have, IMHO.
I have just upgraded to Mint Virginia and I must say that I feel terribly cheated. I sat down with beer and pizza, expecting a 3 to 5 hour adventure like I did with Windows and blast it all...the upgrade to Virginia was finished in just a few minutes. yeah, I kind of felt that way. threw in 4...
You're welcome! :D When Clem and the team announced the demise of the KDE version (from LM19 onwards) a lot of us went exploring for alternative distros to feed our KDE Plasma "fix" and I landed on Manjaro .. would have gone straight Arch but I needed something up and running "pronto&...
The only thing that keeps me checking out other distros is that I like KDE a lot. I know that Mint once provided KDE as one of their DE's but then it was discontinued. The blog post here https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3418 said "KDE is a fantastic environment but it’s also a different world, on...
I sometimes have to look at Windows computers for other people. You have my sincere sympathy!! I'd planned on doing the same when I first switched to Linux (Mint 17.3 Cinnamon) .. even set up a shared ntfs partition with that (and dual-boot) in mind. No prizes for guessing that such intenti...
You'll have "something went wrong". I didn't get that (although I just initially got this, as I already had a running instance and I allow only one): $ QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland smplayer This is SMPlayer v. 23.12.0 (revision 10207) running on Linux .. I closed the already-open instance th...
I snuck in last week and ran Update manager on it...  Also, the bit you added when I had my reply window open .. got to love that one. But .. what happens if the cat comes out of the bag rather than just tripping over the cable? I honestly don't know if I'd have been able...
I'm sure John would be happy to have a few more testers on board! I appreciate the project being revived even if 50MB is a bit unrealistic these days; I have used that in the past to sort out partitions etc. on low-RAM machines. Forum is a bit quiet, but that's to be expected for what's really a nic...
(Wayland support option in the SMPlayer settings is ON) It is on mine as well. Not sure if this test is 100% certain but I installed xorg-xeyes , ran that with the "eyes" set to keep above other windows and moved the pointer over the smplayer windows; the eyes kept following the mouse poi...
My default video player (SMPlayer) doesn't work properly with Wayland so I will be booting into an X11 session for the foreseeable future with this release. I've been using Wayland with KDE for quite a while now and was surprised to see that, especially since I just checked and it's using XWayland ...
Also agreed. Thing is, it's easy to forget that newcomers to the Linux world might feel put off, especially initially. They might not think straight away that the screen they see isn't necessarily the same as the one we see.
Both I think, in Mint. Thing is, I've done system upgrades, compiles etc. and found I lost half the output due to those default limitations. Same thing with the bash history.
Those sensor readings don't reveal much. Do the fans come on under load (and can you feel the warm air from the vent(s)? Reason I ask is these things can get pretty hot pretty darn fast; often unexpectedly so. I was having issues with my old Dell workhorse with it resetting when playing around with ...
9) Confusing file structure: Windows "A" drive, "B" drive, "C" drive, etc. Linux: SDA, SDB NVMe01, etc, etc. Too hard for many to for example move /home to a different drive, in Windows is it simple, just go to properties and type in file path. Not many people set up W...
One thing I've done when I want to "remember" a command which is rarely used but when it is, it's essential for something, is to repeat it but add a # to the beginning, press enter and then it's easily found with e.g. history | grep '#' . (The command won't actually be executed when you pr...
I suppose fo those who follow these stats, a 100% increase in desktop Linux adoption (in whatever form) within the time I've been using it is not something to be sneezed at. It may mean the balance is changing between the advantages or disadvantages of Linux in this regard versus those of other OSes...
Linux has been the future of desktop computing for me for the past 8 years! Dedicated desktop user, even have an old HP Pavilion laptop that I would put Mint on except it has a BIOS that does not permit booting from a USB port. Have you tried using a PLOP Boot Disk? There are images for a 3½" 1...
