Re: Alien alternatives.

This says they also offer a DEB download: https://www.lwks.com/guides/how-to-install-and-uninstall-lightworks-for-linux/. Use that instead of RPM and alien. Using the DEB lets your package manager do its job of ensuring everything the program needs to run is installed and stays installed. There are ...

Re: Alien alternatives.

Every time I try this it always gives the error unable to locate package alien I also tried apt-get and aptitude but nothing worked. That means you have an issue with your software repositories. alien is readily available on all Linux Mint versions from the official repositories (though the Ubuntu ...

So the drive being partitioned as NTFS could have had something to do with that too.
That is the cause of this issue. As detailed above, you can fix all the copied files in one go with a little work.

Re: Alien alternatives.

Pitfall for people new to anything is asking "how do I do this, what I came up with as the solution to my actual problem I'm trying to solve" without telling what that other problem is. Skipping steps doesn't let you learn. One of the hardest things to learn when I first switched to Linux ...

Re: Alien alternatives.

Also I am very new to linux. I started using it 1 week ago. What are you actually trying to install, that you want to install RPM packages on a DEB system? I mean, if you want the quickest route to break your installation go ahead and mess about with alien :) But if you're not using Linux just to s...

Re: Txt files copied from macOS are executable, why\?

why .txt files created in Mac OSX wind up becoming treated as executables on Linux Mint Probably — same as for NTFS partitions — if you on the fly mounted the HFS+ partition in Linux Mint, without specifying options, same default permissions were used for all files on the partition and that means a...

Re: Cinnamon segfaults after fresh 20.1 install then upgrade to 20.2

Just to rule out it being related to any preference or user setting, open Users & Groups from your menu and create new user account. Then log out and log in to this new user account. Does Cinnamon have the same issue with this new user account?

Re: Inotifywait suddenly does nothing on event modify

This should work fine but does it need sudo? How are you prompted for the password on that?
sudo inotifywait --quiet --monitor --event modify "$log" | while read; do
You might instead make /var/log/pure-ftpd/transfer.log world readable or readable for your user.

Re: (Steam/Proton) Games are "Running", not opening and closing

The Overlord disk is formatted as NTFS according to the inxi output, and that is where Proton is trying to unpack the game on (I think, at least it is doing something on the Overlord disk as per the errors I showed above). Perhaps that plays a role in it. I don't use NTFS so I can't say. Perhaps som...

Re: (Steam/Proton) Games are "Running", not opening and closing

Strange. PROTON_LOG=1 should suffice, that will write the log file to your home directory (not any of the subdirectories). You can try a search: find ~ -iname steam\*.log Maybe that will find it. Else, try shutting down Steam and restarting it with the steam command from the terminal. Then run the g...

Re: (Steam/Proton) Games are "Running", not opening and closing

The games are crashing. Set Steam to store logs to find more information on the reason for the crashes. Open properties of one of the games giving you this problem and then set the launch options to: PROTON_LOG=1 %command% Then run the game and wait for it to crash. Then open the steam-<gameID>.log ...

The forums software we use is phpBB. There is an unofficial extension for an older phpBB version to paste images as attachments from the clipboard, but I prefer to stick to official, supported extensions. Possibly phpBB will add this functionality at some point but for right now you'll have to save ...

Re: Question re: @Pjotr 's Update Manager tweaks

That's untrue. That policy was changed because of ongoing criticism about its security (both within the Mint community and in the media) and because of the Timeshift safety net. For no other reasons. It's not as if updates are more safe now than, say, five or ten years ago. That's nonsense. That's ...

Happy to help. Glad it's now doing what you need.

Knowing a bit of shell scripting and core utilities like sed and grep can be a handy tool to have in your back pocket.

To save to a different directory change the below line with the addition at the end. Either use an absolute path, like this if you want to put the files in "/home/username/newfiles": sed -r "s/username/${username}/g; s/password/${password}/g" "$masterfile" > "/home...

Re: Question re: @Pjotr 's Update Manager tweaks

I was never one of those users to just allow updates and hope for the best, and I don't (yet) know enough about Linux to determine what is likely to cause a problem and what isn't -- so it's a case of "knowing just enough to be worried." Users that know a little less than you — that don't...
