Re: Are the Debian update servers really slow?

Are you using a full mirror rather than the main repos? In general a full mirror in your country is a better option than the main repos which are very slow. This is usually to encourage you to use a mirror and not clog up the main servers. Not sure what a "full" mirror is. I went to software source...

Re: Are the Debian update servers really slow?

Just my own observations, but I often see very high numbers at the beginning of a transfer, and then they rapidly fall off to low numbers. I just figured that was a quirk of the algorithm they use to determine speeds. I tried installing "corkscrew" and it seemed to make no difference. Removed it aga...

Re: LMDE was what I meant all along

I'm new here, so maybe this comment is out of place. My apologies if so. I love LMDE. It's just what I've been looking for and not finding for years now. So, I donated a small amount to the Mint team. I figure they deserve it. Maybe it will improve the chances of LMDE being around for a while. I cam...

Re: apt-get speeds?

Thanks. I think I'll do that. I had let it find me one in Canada which was faster, but it seemed to be lagging behind. The main server had offered me two updates, and the Canadian one said there were zero updates. Still, waiting for it to catch up has to be better than not getting anything. Will try...

Re: apt-get speeds?

Speaking of servers, I can't seem to get a good enough connection to update at all: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/debian/Release.gpg Could not connect to packages.linuxmint.com:80 (80.86.83.193). - connect (110: Connection timed out) Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.co...

Keeping track of LMDE

Sorry for noob question. Is there a mailing list, RSS feed, or some such, which people can monitor to hear about new plans for LMDE, discussion of which way it should be going, and so on?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: apt-get speeds?

The updates LMDE users are getting would mostly be coming directly from the Debian servers, no? LMDE is the first thing other than Ubuntu that I've used, so I have no idea what's typical. Distrowatch seems to suggest that Mint is the #3 distro, which is pretty impressive! Would certainly explain why...

Re: apt-get speeds?

Same here. My cable connection (Road Runner, Rochester, NY) limps along anywhere from 25 to 200 kB/s trying to get updates. And just now it took about 20 tries to even get into the forum. I think the Mint servers are getting hammered for some reason.

Oh thanks, they're back now. Appreciate the tip! Cranked them down to 20 pixels and it's perfect.

Re: Romeo + Mint Debian?

I use Romeo and haven't had major problems with it. There was some minor problems with MintMenu when it's icon structure changed (easily fixed) but apart from that it has been smooth sailing. I intend to disable Romeo when Squeeze goes stable and convert my system to a stable squeeze one with backp...

Romeo + Mint Debian?

Sorry, couldn't find what I wanted by searching, and I'm a newb to Mint. Wondering how many folks testing Mint Debian also turn on Romeo? Is there any official advice about the wisdom of this? Related question; if one has enabled Romeo, gotten a few packages, and then wishes to disable Romeo, will t...

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

You can change your Mint source to Romeo so that you can be on Mint "Testing" also. LMDE definitely has to be the coolest of all the Mint versions. :D Oh, that's interesting. I just happen to have an extra install of LMDE that I can blow up if I want to, so maybe I'll try that. Thanks. Wonder why t...

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

I installed Isadora, then found that Julia had just been released, and only then discovered LMDE. As it turned out, I spent roughly a day each with Mint 9 and Mint 10. Fast and furious romances, I guess. You may boast about lovin' them and leavin' them. But the way I heard it, THEY dumped YO...

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

@Wrinkly: No, it isn't a crime yet to have no website. You're probably safe until the turn of the year. @vbj: Thanks for the link to the logos! @crborga: When you speak of all the bugs in previous versions, I presume we're talking about the last few versions of Ubuntu? I'm a refugee from Ubun...

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

Hi Wrinkly, The .iso file is just the one you download originally to burn to a CD/DVD. Yeah, it's going to be a nuisance doing that one download, and then catching up with thousands of updates. But it won't be different versions of the distro, it will just be different media that you use to end up w...

Re: New Mint user

Just to add to what Elisa said, you can find youtube-dl in the repository. Just get the full URL of the youtube video you want, drop to a command line, type in youtube-dl followed by the URL you want.

Hint: you can paste into a terminal by using Ctrl-Shift-V. That was a freebie.
