Re: Catfish "Show in File Manager" Not Working

Yeah the DE is important. Catfish is really written for Xfce. I don;t think it would work well in other desktops.

Re: Linux mint slow and lagging

Replace the hard disk with an SSD drive, and you'll notice a night-and-day difference. True but the OP says that performance went downhill suddenly. Looking at those 2 other threads linked above, you were told to try a number of things. I see little sign that you did very many of them, which is pro...

Re: Need assistance from someone experienced with polkit.

The man command is pretty useless for beginners. It's intended for pros who already know how the program works but they've just forgotten the exact syntax. These guides may prove more useful:

Reading various posts on how Flatpaks work containing all of the dependencies in one package, one poster commented that its only the first package which is the largest, subsequent installs will note the previous installation and libraries making for a reduced size, that was my interpretation bu...

Re: Multiple desktops ?

Actually I wouldn't install multiple DEs in Debian or Arch either. Antix comes with 3 or 4 window managers, but those aren't full desktop environments so you don't get all the dependencies that cause problems with multiple DEs. The problem with multiple desktops is that while it won't necessarily br...

This is such a bad idea. Don't try to outsmart Linux and Windows devs.

Re: Video convertor

Try Avidemux, I use the appimage. Good basic converter and editor. Read the manual to see if it specifies what sort of codec level etc spec it's compatible with. Having a .avi extension isn't necessarily good enough. This is one area where CLI converters can be a pain in the butt. Stick to GUI progr...

I don't think you need the "how to get help" section since this isn't a support question. But you should say which Mint point release and desktop version you're using. Those drivers may not work on all releases.

+1. Most flatpak updates are for the runtime libraries. The one in that screenshot was definitely one, it's a video codec update.

I do not believe you have much to worry about but just to be sure this page may be of help. https://linuxsecurity.com/features/the-three-best-tools-you-need-to-scan-your-linux-system-for-malware ... it looks like all these tools require giving them root access - that is a huge RED flag.... Re: Nvidia Palmas drivers

If you search "linux palmas" you'll find that nvidia doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it. Removing software you do not understand is a fabulous way to break the OS. ANd there are so many packages there, Linux is much more modular than Windows. I don't have any problems with run...

Re: When did you start to realize Linux will never become the future of desktop computing?

Probably 2000. But what Spamegg said as well. Linux is still too much of a "tinkerers OS" and not ready for those who just want to turn it on and have it work. While I have done my fair share of tinkering on my journey of switching (mostly other distros) Mint has been the closest I have c...

Adding this deb-multimedia repo was a bad call . There is a long history of breaking apt and creating dependency hell in Debian stable systems. And it actually makes harder for us to help you in troubleshooting this audio stuttering. Remove this repo from your software sources, find and uninstall a...

Use at your own risk but you could enable the Kubuntu Backports PPA sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports I've used this with 21.3 with no problems. But if anything breaks you get to keep all the pieces. Anyway, this will update you to digikam 8.2.0 at the time of writing. "If"...

Re: Hanbrake and QSV, apt vs. flathub

I always prefer PPA over flatpak. I really have NO flatpaks installed on my LM. And so I do, Dan-cer, so I do, that's the reason why I asked the question. Unfortunately, in order to get QSV to work, I need to install the Flatpak version AND the Flatpak QSV plugin. Installing Handbrake from other PP...

Actually I don't think that the problem with these rootkit programs is that they're inherently useless. Re: My experience using Linux Mint as newbie

Truth be told, I ran MX KDE for a while and then Debian 12 KDE for a month. I've switched to Debian 12 Gnome. Plasma 5.27.5 is just too buggy. Gnome works a LOT better, and I'm finding the simplicity refreshing. Quite a change from KDE. I hated Gnome 3 bit Gnome 4 (43 actually) is really very nice.
