Official (Synaptic) software updates

Could someone please confirm how this works? I have LM17.1 and one program (Claws-Mail) has not been updated for at least two years. In that time the software itself has seen three major updates. Now that LM18, based on a newer version of Ubuntu, is available, does this mean that Claws-Mail will nev...

Re: Access Mint's Files via Android Phone?

As I said, I have a Windows based network (Desktop - Windows, laptop, Windows, Netbook 1 is Windows, Netbook 2 runs Mint). My Moto E can access and transfer files from all these machines via ES File Explorer.

Re: Access Mint's Files via Android Phone?

Hello,

You might also like to have a play with ES File Explorer, free from the Play Store. I have just transferred a file from my Mint 17 machine to my Moto E via my (Windows) wi-fi network.

Enjoy your research!

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

I am now marking this thread as Solved. I had thought that with DATA partitions it might be possible to have just one installation of a program shared by two versions of Mint. This is not the case. Once I downloaded and installed the program in Xfce I could run it in Xfce but with the same data (Boo...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Thank you for your further reply. I will study this later today but you have answered one important point. As for the choice of browsers, I was a long-time Firefox user until the constant updates and the Australis theme. Now I have a faster browser (no, not essentially Firefox) with which I am perfe...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

I'm even more baffled now. I tried the which and sudo find commands, negative. So is that suggesting not installed? The files are there. What do you mean by installed? To me (probably wrongly?) that would involve downloading Pale Moon into Xfce and letting the installation process complete (with Pro...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Thank you again! Yes, I found out (the hard way) about spaces in file names. Below, the output of the first two commands. gam@gam-1000H ~ $ which "pale moon" gam@gam-1000H ~ $ locate "pale moon" /mnt/DATA/moonchild productions/pale moon /mnt/DATA/moonchild productions/pale moon/p...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Thank you again for your reply and continued interest. I will now try to retype my post - got to the end and discovered (not for the first time) that I was no longer logged in. I am afraid that I am still struggling. Just to clarify, I have Thunderbird running under both Mate and Xfce (using the oth...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Can anyone help, please? The answer is probably very simple... like how do you find and install the appropriate command?

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Flemur, As promised, I am now working on your suggestions and so far, so good. I have followed your instructions in your post of May 31 and for my MATE installation, all is OK. Now (for me) the tricky bit - please bear with me if the answer is very simple!: I want to install the same program on Xfce...

grizzler,

For the benefit of anyone following this topic, I confirm that I copied/moved the directory named fxt2xnnw.default.

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Well, I seem to have solved the problem. I can run Thunderbird under Xfce and I have my accounts, etc. I am unable to explain why it works except that encouraged by grizzlers example I arrived at the following:- In MATE, I found that changing the IsRelative setting in /home/gam/.thunderbird to 0 res...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Thank you for your further help. Two questions for you as I work through your posting: 1. Will your proposals give me a system in which my existing data is available under both MATE and Xfce? I am worried that if I do not refer to fxt2xnnw.default I might lose it. 2. I do not follow your strictures ...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

grizzler and Flemur - thank you for your replies. I think I must be doing something stupid somewhere. This is the current state of my files. [Edit: I no longer receive the error message but I am taken to a Thunderbird set-up screen for adding e-mail accounts, etc. I don't want this - how to I get to...

Re: Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I am stuck. I have managed to get Thunderbird in MATE to run correctly with Thunderbird now in /mnt/DATA/thunderbird. This means that all my existing correspondence and addresses are intact. The problem I have is with TB in Xfce which is unused but which has ...

Using DATA partition for Thunderbird and Firefox [Solved]

I have a DATA partition to share information between two versions of Mint. I am wondering whether it is possible to set up (for example) Thunderbird and Firefox so that they can be accessed by both distributions? If so, could someone please provide some instructions? One (MATE 17) already has Thunde...

Re: Making a dual Linux Mint boot

gold_finger, We are very nearly there. I have had to stop to work on other things but it is looking good. I am at the stage where I can dual boot but have yet to set up the DATA partitions in Xfce, so I will not mark this thread as 'Solved' until I have done that tomorrow. All this would have been i...

Re: Making a dual Linux Mint boot

gold_finger, mount now loooks OK. The next step is to instal Xfce. I have looked at the tutorial to which you refer and I am a little unsure where I should join the process. We have been through the partitioning process, so after booting my live Xfce device, selecting Instal and "Something else...

Re: Making a dual Linux Mint boot

gold_finger, Mea culpa I knew there was another way of posting screen shots but I could not remember where I had seen the instructions. Now bookmarked. Output below. I also erred in not going beyond the fstab stage of the instructions, I had misunderstood. Sorry. gam@gam-1000H ~ $ cat /etc/fstab # /...
