Re: [SOLVED] Cinnamon 18.1 high cpu usage
While jumping major kernel revisions 4.4 -> 4.8/4.10, I've found it best to first return to open source nouveau driver, upgrade the kernel, then install the NVIDIA driver. For minor updates (newer version of the same revision) this step is unnecessary. Praise God for miracles! Great to hear drivers ...

Re: Goodbye dual boot, hello VM
...Looked at VirtualBox and I like it. Installation straightforward - don't download the latest from the VB site , you will get unresolved dependencies, go for the version in software manager (V5.0). You need the base version, the QT GUI and while you are at it, the guest-additions iso (this is ins...

Re: Mint 18 Cinnamon vmware workstation 12 add vmware tools
Hi, Guessing GNU/Linux version of tools has automatically downloaded on the host? Check usr -> lib -> vmware -> isoimages. If yes, then... (Method I currently find easiest.) Copy ISO to the Desktop Attach ISO image to guest virtual optical drive. Boot the guest, open the virtual optical disc, extrac...

Re: VMWare Workstation 12.5.5 requires gcc-6
Hi, In case helpful, just tried VMware Workstation Player 12.5.5 for you, using Mint 18.1 Cinnamon (kernel 4.10.0-14), it installs and starts without requiring other files. @Pierre, Newer versions of Player are called Workstation Player , so saying, not sure if OP tried Workstation, or Workstation P...

Re: Win10 1703 will not boot on VirtualBox in Mint
Note that the same Windows.iso works fine in VirtualBox under Windows. What seems to be the problem here? As altair4 hinted, if using an older VirtualBox version, download 5.1.20 direct from Oracle's website (you'll need the Xenal version for your CPU type). Once installed, if still no go, try boot...

Re: Cinnamon 18.1 high cpu usage
Not quite as good as Windows in some cases, better in others, depends how games are ported. Phoronix is a good site for hardware and game benchmarks, sometimes comparing games on GNU/Linux versions and Windows.me_1 wrote:...I'm not sure how games are performing in linux though. ...

Re: Cinnamon 18.1 high cpu usage
No, i have an acer, not very old. I just tried sudo nvidia-xconfig and it doesn't work, says command not found. Is there a way to tell which video card i'm using internal or external? The external video card have it's own processor and that should be an advantage and won't occupy ram. Can i tell so...

Re: Cinnamon 18.1 high cpu usage
If the website has a video playing, or lots of scripts, peaks do not appear overly excessive for a dual core CPU running Cinnamon. How does the CPU scale on a website such as this forum? Might be interesting performing a test, same website/s but using Firefox with uBlock Origin and possibly NoScript...

Re: Best method for getting microsoft office?
Wine and Crossover make your Linux partly vulnerable for Windows malware... If you go the Wine route, to help protect your system, create a new user account (just for Wine use), only install Wine using that account, make sure to never launch Wine with root (superuser) privileges. Performing those s...

Hi and welcome to the Mint forum,
Drivers look fine. What do you consider high CPU usage, what were you doing at the time (software being used)?

There may be another way to approach this? Re: Other than WINE - is there a way to run Windows app?
Definitely recommend (one of the few exceptions) downloading VirtualBox direct from Oracle's website. Pierre may have mistyped? If using Mint 18/18.1 you'll need the 16.04 Xenial version suitable for (as Pierre mentioned) host machine CPU architecture (i386=32-bit, AMD64=64-bit). Before creating a v...

Re: Screen tear on Intel HD 530
True it should help Optimus systems (NVIDIA users), but since those systems use the Intel GPU for display output, and users can optionally choose to use just the Intel GPU, it is essentially an Intel fix. After making a system backup, has to be worth a try?

There is also an Intel fix mentioned in my post.
In case that doesn't fix the issue, maybe one of the solutions mentioned in this thread will help?

Re: Mint 18.2 running Vmware workstation player runs slow.
Hi, Looking at the system information, you are likely seeing slowdowns due to using Swap memory. Best solution (if possible) add more physical RAM. Also, if not already done so, change swappiness to 10 Check current setting (most likely default setting of 60) cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness Change setti...
