Re: ideal OS
I think there will be no description of an "ideal OS" that will satisfy everybody. As you already mentioned yourself; being "user friendly" and customazible are the opposite properties to the point. What properties constitute a "ideal OS" for me, will be for most points...

For the sound, have you increased the volume? Default after installation it is muted. (Use the speaker icon in the panel to increase the volume.) Re: Gnome/Kde, Virtualbox, Extern HDD... and and and
The basic installation of Linux Mint needs about 8 GiB of disk space; that includes all the default programs, like audio/video player (Banshee + VLC), burning software (Brasero), office applications (LibreOffice) and so on (yes, those come with Linux Mint and you don't need to do anything to install...

Re: What programs comes with Linux Backtrack?
Moved here by moderator I think you mean BackTrack Linux? That is a distro focussed on penetration testing. It will have a different software selection, based on the specific niche use it is intended for. Of course you can install additional software on it. How about just downloading it, and runnin...

Your Intel Q9650 is a 64 bit processor, so I would go with 64 bit. As for choosing between Gnome and KDE, both have their strong points, but it is really personal preference. I'd suggest Gnome to start with. If you Google "linux mint 12 video review" or "linux mint 12 kde video revie...
