Re: Which distro is suitable?

This is true! It's a great time to go bargain hunting right now, as so many people are replacing their hardware that is unsuitable for Win10, and so they think it's obsolete... It's not, of course! Us Linux users know better! She could spend very little money, or nothing at all, and end up wit...

Re: Which distro is suitable?

Maybe Zorin OS? Check the system requirements here: http://zorinos.com/faq.html It's XP-like rather than Win98-like, but if it runs on her hardware, it could still suit her needs. If all else fails, it might be time for a slightly newer (second-hand?) machine... and Mint (because it's so newbie-frie...

Re: Trouble Installing palemoon

Hey, whatever works for you, works for you. From an academic viewpoint, I'm indeed still curious why the installer that worked so well for me did not work for you. Guess we'll never know. I don't think that the person who makes Pale Moon really cares whether or not anyone uses their software though....

I'm assuming the xboot program and the 'drop box' you mention comes from here, is that right?

Re: New to Mint and confused

Bosshogg, it's really best to pick one tutorial and stick with that, following it to the letter. You started off using http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2014/0 ... t-usb.html , why change halfway through? You'll only ending up confusing yourself more, and us as well!

Re: Best Search Engine ?

Hello Jørn Rudolph, I prefer Startpage. It's pretty much as good as Google, but without the privacy concerns.

Re: Firefox!

Personally I've been using SeaMonkey as my primary browser for years. Secondary has always been FF but I recently replaced it by Pale Moon. Pale Moon is really nice! StartPage has been my search engine of choice for a long long time, because of privacy issues; I have nothing to hide, but nobody need...

Re: New to Mint and confused

http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2014/05/how-to-create-bootable-linux-mint-usb.html I got these guidelines online and OK it states executable not .exe. Yes, I found the sentence you probably mean: "When the download has completed double click on the executable." But that refers to the sof...

Re: need help fixing extremely annoying problem

it says my system is up to date.
That's the main window. To see which kernel you're using and which ones are available, click on view => Linux kernels.

(I'm not saying that installing a newer kernel will fix your problem. I don't know that. But I do know where you can do that.)

That is quite a different problem than what was stated in your first post. You'll get better answers if you state the question more precisely.

Re: New to Mint and confused

Can you show us where you found those instructions? There shouldn't be any .exe files in a Linux iso, that's a Windows file format. Here are some instructions: http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2014/07/how-to-install-linux-mint-alongside.html Here's another tutorial: http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Li...

Re: How'd you cut your teeth on Linux?

Mint is totally My First Linux, literally! I wanted to look into alternative OSses because I didn't fancy W10, so I started reading around, and I found several articled proclaiming that Mint was supposed to be newbie-friendly and polished. So I gave it a go, started off dual-booting, and in just two...

Re: Installer options I'd love to see

Pjotr, in my view the disadvantages you mention don't stand up to scrutiny. Let's look at them one by one, if you don't mind. I don't think it's a good idea, because I consider a separate /home partition to be a needless complication..... Needless, because you must have *external* backups of your do...

Re: Which Linux Mint Distro to completely replace Windows?

Hey camor, If no one has said it so far, I'll be the one to say it: welcome to Mint and to the forum ! I haven't seen Martienne around for a while. It's true that she had a lot of problems, but it's also true that she apparently has very specific needs and wants, and a lot of Windows knowledge that ...

Re: I do miss Linux Mint 9

LMDE will work on non-PAE hardware! AntiX works fine, too, and is faster on even older machines... but it lacks Mint's userfriendliness. Bodhi Legacy is much the same, just a little more elegant, and not at all easy to use for a newbie, out of the box.
So I'd give Betsy a try.
