Re: can someone delete my veracrypt files without password (like they can delete if i use ccrypt)

Would be interested in this, but have simply made a practice of routinely backing up important encrypted containers.

Re: What word processor do you use?

LibreOffice can save to all Microsoft Office file formats. Have you used it sharing files back and forth with folks using Windows? That's where I hear the compatibility breaks down. Everyone can open the files, but they don't look the same and random things like tables get messed up. All this is he...

Re: What word processor do you use?

I like LibreOffice and use it when writing to create and send a PDF or print document through to completion - but long ago learned not to share work in progress with MS Word users unless using MS Word myself. Except for very primitive documents, file conversion is terrible and one shouldn't inflict ...

Re: Linux Mint 32bit on an old Laptop

It took me a long time to realize that PCs that shipped with 32 bit XP or Windows 7 were completely compatible with 64 bit operating systems, in particular Linux Mint. The best thing for the OP if not absolutely certain the PC box itself is limited, is to create a persistent live USB of 64 bit XFCE ...

Re: Live Shots from Iphone

Not an iPhone user and no idea about viewing the Live Photos in software off the phone, but scrolling down Support page shows how to disable it if not wanted.

Re: remove old darktable ppa - solved

The pmjdebruijn PPA stopped working last year when Darktable 3.x was released. Soon after the Ubuntu Handbook blogger Ji M created this one (Method 2), and it has worked reliably since, updating DT through the Mint Update Manager, etc. http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2020/12/darktable-3-4-0-rele...

Re: Bootable mint on 8GB flash drive

From some years experience, first know there are basically three ways to do bootable USB drives: 1) "Live USB" which installs the operating system, but will not save any changes to settings, configuration or software or user data between reboots. Every reboot is a "fresh install"...

Re: Mouse Pointer Too Small

Might be something specific to Mate, this is LM20 XFCE, pointer is at size max 48:

I've installed a colored and lefty capable third-party pointer pack, but the same resizer works on the preinstalled ones. (Mouse & Touchpad dialog, Theme tab)

Re: How can I transfer notes from iPhone (or iCloud) to Linux?

The only cloud storage services I know of with excellent Ubuntu/Mint desktop clients that sync to local storage are Dropbox, which has imposed a three device limit to free service, and Mega, which I use instead. https://itsfoss.com/install-mega-cloud-storage-linux/ While I use Mega on Android, I see...

Re: is there a FAST search app

I'm going to be installing FSearch on a full Mint partition to try it out normally, with file search paths set to both Mint and Windows partitions - not expecting any problems with that (although it is beta). Now that's what i am interested in! Please keep us informed I'll certainly report back abo...

Re: is there a FAST search app

I tried the FSearch PPA on a thumb drive: LM20 Cinnamon, and tried searching a Windows 7 C: Drive (the live USB lacks permission to search the Mint dual boot). If i understand well, you can only search with it installed on usb? And it can't search ext4? I'm dual booting Mint and Win 7. If FSearch i...

Re: Installing Mint on a bootable USB with persistence

In either case you have launched the Mint installer offering the choice of dual boot or complete overwrite of your hard drive. If you don't want to fully install Mint to your hard drive or to some other drive, don't do that. Ah I see, yep I was definitely confused. Looks like I did successfully cre...

Re: Installing Mint on a bootable USB with persistence

Like others above, looks to me like you are confused. Either a) you have already successfully created a bootable persistent live USB with the Rufus tool, and can use it as is, or b) you successfully created a non-persistent live USB, that will work but will not save settings or software installation...

Thanks for the tip about Luminance HDR, wasn't aware. Quickly found a Youtube for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu7vUHrL1Ao Not sure if Luminance will handle the Sony RAW (.ARW) format, so might have to convert it to something like TIFF format first, for example with XnConvert or one of the ed...

In firefox you can CTRL + mouse wheel Can't get any easier than that. This is the way to do it. Trouble is, I'll forget all about it by the next time I need to make the adjustment. Great tip, thanks. I see it works on Chromium, too. On Firefox I've always dragged the [- % +] control to the top Menu...

Re: move from Mint 18 to 20 ?

I think it's a good time to move from LM18 to LM20, some (for me) important software wasn't initially ready for Ubuntu 20.04 and time was needed for interim work arounds, but software is all good now. I have found LM20 XFCE marginally more resource demanding than earlier Mints. Have installed new LM...
