Perhaps to help eliminate the nVidia driver as the culprit, go to the Driver Manager (found under Administration in the Menu). A better solution might be for you to take a look at xdm, Extreme Download Manager. It does all of the things you want to do and more.

Simply extract the archive and in the extracted archive's directory,
sudo sh install.sh
