Perhaps to help eliminate the nVidia driver as the culprit, go to the Driver Manager (found under Administration in the Menu). From the Driver Manager, select the nouveau (open source) display driver rather than the nVidia driver. Restart the computer. It's usually best to check what driver the use...

A better solution might be for you to take a look at xdm, Extreme Download Manager. It does all of the things you want to do and more.

Simply extract the archive and in the extracted archive's directory, sudo sh install.sh.
