Re: Firefox freezes computers!

I just booted another HDD in the machine that I have been having trouble with. It has Mint 18.0, 64bit, Cinnamon 3.0.7, kernel 4.4.0-116 generic, FF 58.0.2 64bit, NoScript and uBlock Origin. When I go to some pages like YouTube CPU bounces to 100% briefly but then goes down to below 25%

Re: Firefox freezes computers!

New user, about the same. Hard to tell in detail, will set up NoScript and uBlock Origin on it. I just started an old machine that has FF 58.0.2 on it. Added NoScript and uBlock Origin. The pages that were giving me trouble are not so bad. CPU use will bounce up to 100% briefly, but then will go bac...

Re: Firefox freezes computers!

I understand the security issue. That said, why did the system start having problems after the latest FF update. Something wrong w/the update, or FF? As I said, things really tanked after the last FF update.

Re: Firefox freezes computers!

Deleting .mozilla, renaming .mozilla.old to .mozilla worked. I now have my bookmarks and settings back. Thanks. Now what to do? revert to older FF version? Everything tanked after the last FF update via mint updates. Is google the problem? I usually use DuckDuckgo.

Re: Firefox freezes computers!

I found .mozilla at /home/me. Reamed .mozilla .mozilla.old. restarted FF. Processor is still flat lining at 100%, but not for so long at some of the pages I have been visiting. I lost all my many book marks BOO! Would be good to warn that bookmarks and settings, will be lost so they might be saved. ...

Firefox freezes my computer

open your /home directory and press Ctrl+h to show the hidden files. Navigate to the .mozilla directory and temporarily rename it as .mozilla.old. No .mozilla in /home. I opened File System to find: /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/langpack-en-CA@firefox.mozilla.org.xpi /usr/lib/firefox-addons/ex...

Re: SOLVED Flush Memory

VI is good for things. I don't edit files such as the one yesterday very often. There is so much time in between that I forget how to use VI. If I used it every day that would be different. VI is handy if the graphical interface goes wonky.

Re: Flush Memory

I woke up and did sudo xed to edit /etc/sysctl.conf

Swappiness is now reported at 10.

I now understand that 75% of RAM being occupied was not the problem. The problem was swap.

Re: Flush Memory

At 21% to 50% it runs well. At 75% it get's sluggish. If I shut down and restart with RAM usage reported at 21% it runs fine. I would like to have it running well without having to shutdown and restart. It's starting to sound to me like your "swappiness" is set too high. Please run the following co...

Re: Flush Memory

After that I logged out and then back in. With Firefox, Thunderbird, System Monitor, Alsa Mixer, Volume Control, and Audio Recorder open I am only using 21% of RAM. RAM only gets to 75% occasionally, once every few weeks. I ran su -c "echo 3 >'/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches' && swapoff -a && swapon -a && ...

Re: Flush Memory

Yes, but why would you? My laptop becomes sluggish at %75. Free memory is wasted memory. Cache and buffer memory are automatically made available when applications request more memory. What do you propose I do? - Not adding more RAM. Why is the computer still acting like it had very many things run...

SOLVED Flush Memory

I was running a lot of programs at once, using up 75% of 4 GB of RAM. When I close most of those programs, leaving only Thunderbird and Firefox open memory is still 75% occupied. I imagine that is partly by design so that I can open the programs I was using rapidly. I can shutdown and reboot with a ...

Re: Solved Wireless Connection

To confirm, wireless is not doable. I connected printer to my router with Ethernet cable. Mint saw the printer and automagically installed it. I did not have to do anything. That's a first. I am now able to print and scan from my wireless laptop. I tried Ethernet earlier this week, but Mint did not ...

Re: Wireless Connection

You have the right understanding. The printer is a non wifi printer. It does have Ethernet. I suspect it does not have software to recognize wifi. I just ran the printers Network configuration. I am sending it as a jpeg. I am currently connected to it using USB printer cable. I tried adding the prin...

Solved Wireless Connection

Mint 18-0 Cinnamon 64bit. HP Office Jet 6500. Non wireless. Ethernet is out. I connected a Edimax USB wireless dongle to the printer using a type A by type B connector Can I expect that to work? I was able to connect from my laptop using USB cable. How do I get Mint to see the wireless dongle.

Re: HP Quality

Here's a youtube video on disassembly, lots more there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjqHFN-da8M That's a good start. Seen it before. I need to go further than that. I may need to work on the paper feed roller. That white gear visible near the end of the video I believe is attached to it. It doe...

Re: HP Quality

HP is fine; good build quality. Check out Amazon customer ratings for HP's current printers. The reviews are half good and about half very negative. Maybe like Dell their business grade stuff is better and gets better support than consumer grade. I always had a high regard for HP Printers until rec...
