Re: "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted"

@JerryF I did not mark this solved because as far as I am concerned, this issue is NOT SOLVED ! This BUG has popped up five (six?) different times on three different Linux installs, and I don't understand why . (Two different computers and a VM.) This is sure to return at some random time in the fu...

Re: Desktops

... That's why there are different kinds of DEs motorcycles. Well said! @j1nz6 I've been using Cinnamon for a couple of years and love it. When newer versions of Mint were coming out, I decided to try MATE. Personally, I didn't like it. I've been trying out Xfce. I love it too! It's my installation...

Re: Security Breach! - Home directories readable to other users

That perplexed me when I found out that 755 is the default for a /Home/user account.

For an OS such as Linux that prides itself on security, that doesn't seem like a good idea.

Re: "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted"

Could you edit your original post and place the SOLVED in the Subject: line. The problem here is that Lakef isn't the topic starter, so... no, they can't. That's a clear disadvantage of piggybacking on an existing subject (and a fine reason why it's formally against forum rules to do so). I'll do i...

Re: "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted"

SOLVED The solution with issuing the command sudo gksudo mintupdate is temporary. I got a permanent solution by assuring that the folder and its contents /etc/apt have sufficient privileges. I think the folders need read and execute privileges and the files read privileges for the group root and fo...

Windows 7 and Linux Mint 17.2 (Linux has 31.5GB - is it enough?)
...
31.5GB for Linux is a bit small if you plan on storing files in Home. You'll soon run out of space.

If one of those HPFS/NTFS/exFAT partitions is for files, then 31.5GB for just the Linux system should be ok.

Re: Why Linux Mint?

I've been using Linux for a long time and I'm well aware of the issues Linux has faced. So far in my experience both Mint and Manjaro are easy to get a working and usable system up and running quickly. Yes you will have to do a few treats here and there, but that is true or any OS you use. As much ...

Re: Sharing files Mint18.3/W7

Windows can't see Linux files because it can't read EXT4 file systems.

Usually, any files that are shared in VirtualBox, you set up a shared folder in the virtual machine.

Mint is also for people who just want a working system without having to fiddle around after installation.
I wish I could agree with that statement, but there are so many people in these forums (I'm including myself), who have had to fiddle with Mint to get it working properly.

Never really understand questions along the lines of 'x desktop is not my favourite, so why does it exist?'
I find that more people are thinking like that.

If I don't like this or that, then it shouldn't be made.

Re: Difference between actors voices and action scenes volume

The problem you have is pretty universal. The sound engineers who mix the film and tv series soundtracks mostly have damaged hearing and deliberately mix the tracks this way for effect in cinemas. They are real bozos, and there is little to be done about it, because it has become the industry norm ...

Wow you folks make it sound like Linux Mint is the only Linux Distro that works OOTB without any problems.
I didn't say anything or even imply that Mint is the only distro that works OOTB without problems.
